but it is even remotely possible, that sometimes, very rarely, the obession with artisan foods might just possibly, maybe, put the teeniest bit of the smallest portion of it's toe over the line into the world of pretentious wank?

Sorry. Listening to the Food Programme on R4. It does sometimes annoy me a tad.

I always have some food in my handbag. Sometimes for weeks before it surfaces or tries to crawl out.

I think that possibly what I find a bit irritating is that many people, for generations, made their own jam, bread, pickles, cakes etc. (Mum being a case in point). No-one called them 'artisan food makers' even though often what they made was lovely quality. I take issue with the labelling of something that should and could be more common as something special and exclusive.

And whilst my mum made our clothes and spun, dyed and wove/knitted wool from our sheep, she never ever made a handbag (to my knowledge )

Carmenere is on my list of sensible food talkers.

20 years ago I had friends who talked about recycling and we all thought they were barking hippies. They just got the message 20 years before the rest of us.

What Carmenere is talking about is plain sense that we will all understand and take as fact in 20 years time. It might be quite late for a lot of things we take for granted by then - ie we don't all eat cod any more now due to overfishing.

I've learned that just because big companies do it, and the government doesn't ban it - it doesn't mean that it's good. In fact, it's all about profit.

I have been very naiive.

I don't lose sleep over the labelling or artisan/non-artisan products, ormirian. And I've got a lovely pattern somewhere for a felted bag, if she ever changes her mind.

OrmIrian · 30/09/2008 13:46

OK. I'll pass that on bundle

It's been a long day. I agree with many of you. You are so sensible and clever.
