Soak them for half an hour. Fry up some onions till soft, add curry powder mild/medium/hot depending on how you like it, teasp tomato puree. Add the lentils and water to cover, bring to boil and simmer gently till they are tender. Skim off any froth that forms.

soak o/n. Fry some onions until soft, add tsp pureed garlic, tsp ginger. Add lentils, water, and salt, cumin, coriander powder, 1/2 tsp chilli powder, couple of whole green chillis and 2 or 3 fresh tomatoes, diced. (I also add a dash of worcester sauce, but doubt my indian in laws would approve!) Simmer til tender, garnish with fresh coriander.

How about Tarka Dahl? DH loves it and I'd like to make him some. Is there a difference?

CountessDracula · 24/09/2008 16:42

I think it has otters in it

Jux · 24/09/2008 16:43

Ah, so I need to find a river first?

CountessDracula · 24/09/2008 16:45

yes and a net

I want to make dhal and curries like Indian restaurants do, not 'proper' Indian food.

ChopsTheDuck · 24/09/2008 17:26

tarka is usually red lentils.

indian restaurants make dhal by cooking it longer so it is soggy and thicker in consistancy like soup. I personally think they tend to use too much ginger too.

Indian recipes are usually more watery. My recipe is for dhal curry rather than a strictly indian dhal so it is more soupy in consitancy.

I have a pond. Do you think I could entice an otter to come to me?

noonki · 26/09/2008 12:05

thank you all!
