Great, sounds much better already.

The one I have is 500g lentils:600ml water and therefore is stuck to the bottom of the pan before I get any spice in.

Thank you

Fry onions until soft
Add garlic, turmeric and a little cumin
Add red lentils
Add water
Simmer until done
Add coriander (optional)
I serve it for the children like this and for adults I then melt a little butter/oil in a pan, add garam masala and hot chilli powder

mrsruffallo · 10/09/2008 19:45

Then pour over top, I forgot to add

nickytwotimes · 10/09/2008 19:45

We had dahl tonight - was smashing.

1 onion and i clove garlic fried. Add 1 tsp groun cumin, 1 tsp ground corriander, half tsp ground chilli and half teaspoon of ground ginger and fry for 5 mins. Add 9 oz lentils and 1 pint of water. Simmer for 50 mins with lid on and stirring occassionally. Add a tin of tomato puree and simmer another 10 mins. Serve with rice / naan/ whatever.

I make double and freeze it.

Does anyone do one with yellow lentils and coconut milk? I'm sure I've had that somewhere.

BBBee · 10/09/2008 19:46

what ruffalo siad word for word

(did I get teh recipe of you in teh first place...)

Overmydeadbody · 10/09/2008 19:48

I am eating Dahl with rice as I type

What Mrsruffallo said.

Slarty, do you mean add the raw onion, garlic and spices to the boiling water/lentil mixture?

Coz I really wouldn't recommend doing that, onions take ages to soften that way and spices should always be gently fried and the other ingredients added to them rather than the other way round.

Davine, I would keep checking on it and top up with more water if it looks a little dry, and stir it to stop it sticking to the bottom.

Red lentils shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to cook.

Overmydeadbody · 10/09/2008 19:51

yep yellow lentils with coconut milk and mustard seeds is very nice.

Same basic method as already outlined, but with the addition on mustard seeds to the onions and some coconut milk to taste.

Yellow lentils take longer to cook, I'd allow at least 40 minutes.

Overmydeadbody · 10/09/2008 19:53

garam masala and chopped corainder are lovely added.

Also, one of my favourites is dahl with spinach added. I just add chopped fresh prinach once it is cooked. The heat wilts the leaves just enough to be cooked.

mrsruffallo · 10/09/2008 19:57

Oh no BBBeee It's kind of a mixture of two seperate recipes I had for dahl.
It's a big hit in the Ruffallo home!!

mrsruffallo · 10/09/2008 19:58

Agree woth OMDB-you must fry the spices first to release the flavour

IAteDavinaForDinner · 10/09/2008 20:00

Oooooh tons of great ideas, thanks.

My recipe is edible, but it makes too much and needs to be nursed carefully due to dryness issues.

Went down nicely with baked tatties and red wine [burp]

yes, my recipe book says raw onions and garlic - trust me!

have tried it with yellow lentils but it didnt work. chana daal, takes ages

ravenAK · 10/09/2008 22:20

Inauthenticbutyummystudentfodderdaal_

Yellow split peas work really well but best to soak for a few hours in water (I use veg cooking water) beforehand.

Then fry lots of onions & peppers, add few spoonfuls curry paste (Pataks korma & jalfrezi both good if you want something mild for children), tip in split peas (or unsoaked red lentils), tin chopped tomatoes & more water. Peeled, cubed sweet potato/butternut squash can be added at this stage.

Simmer slowly for 30 minutes or possibly longer, till mushy. For a sweet, mild version, add a few chunks of block coconut towards the end of cooking. You can also whang in a couple of blocks of frozen spinach if liked...

Dhal Curry

225g red lentils
2 tspn ground ginger
1 tspn cumin
1tspn turmeric
2 potatoes, peeled & diced
2 tbsp butter
1 onion, sliced
1 green pepper, chopped
madras curry powder or paste
1 clove garlic
tin chopped tomatoes

1.5 pts water in large pan, add spices & salt & bring to boil.
Add lentils, stir & bring back to boil. Boil for 5 mins then add potatoes & cook till lentils mushy.
In separate pan (I use large frying pan) heat butter & fry onions & pepper until soft.
Add curry powder/paste to taste & garlic & chopped tomatoes.
After a minute or two, add lentil mixture.
Cook for 5-10 more minutes then serve.

This is the only recipe I have used and it is lovely. Very moreish - Beware!!

SlartyBartFast · 10/09/2008 22:30

i got mine from this man although this one he calls soup! but same idea, measurements may or may not be slightly different,

SlartyBartFast · 10/09/2008 22:31

khalid aziz btw.

GrimmaTheNome · 10/09/2008 22:34

I must remember to try those when I've finished current batch of chickpea and coconut milk curry - not dahl exactly but I think a safer bet than channa dahl

lulumama · 11/09/2008 12:08

how long does dahl take? i am wanting to make it tongiht.. got all my ingredients this morning

stirlingmum · 11/09/2008 13:01

About 30 mins usually, Lulu

lulumama · 11/09/2008 15:56
