Making a crumble - does it have to be demerara sugar?

Whilst the house is quiet am making a apple & blackberry crumble and just realised I have no demerara sugar - can I use normal sugar or golden caster sugar? (have 4 bags of that!)

Thanks

You can use any kind of sugar you like.

any sugar - I like to use demerara - but the other day (like you) I was making apple and blackbery crumble and just ordinary sugar.

AMumInScotland · 03/09/2008 13:58

I always use boring white granulated.

JulesJules · 03/09/2008 14:03

Any sugar will do. Demerara just gives a bit of extra crunch to the topping.

I am just about to make a rhubarb crumble with boring old ordinary sugar

never used demerera - sounds nice though! Just use bog standard granulated and a little bit of cinnamon if its an apple crumble.

cupsoftea · 03/09/2008 14:04

cheapest will do fine

WilyWombat · 03/09/2008 14:05

Oh use up the golden caster if you have tons of that, it wont hurt.

Mary berry swears by demerara but that's for the crumble of course

I use granulated for almost everything - you could add a smidge of treacle and mix through the sugar if you want the colour. That's how I make dark brown sugar - Demerara might be different, but it's not going to make much difference difference in a crumble, I think.

I came on here to comment - and see that I already have, back in 2008 when this thread was started 😂

I was making a rhubarb crumble, my DDs were then aged 6 and 4. The older one 22, has graduated and is about to start her masters. She still loves rhubarb crumble. The younger one is 20 and at university. She will just eat the crumble topping, especially if sprinkled with demerara...
