Are you strict about throwing them out when they pass their sell by date?

Or if it says in small print "consume within 4 weeks of opening". Do you just keep anyway?

Depends. If they are well pickled, I will keep them indefinitely. If they are milk based, I will usually adhere to the use-by dates.

umberella · 02/09/2008 21:38

same as squeaky

PeaMcLean · 02/09/2008 21:40

So if in vinegar, so long as it doesn't look mouldy, should be fine?

You have to judge for yourself.

PeaMcLean · 02/09/2008 21:51

What sort of MN answer is that?

MN must be broken. I want Judgements!

pea, those things would never last that long in my house - I am a pickle addict.

chuck 'em over here!

ps, got any picalilli [probably sp]? gherkins?

cremolafoam · 02/09/2008 21:58

keep: oil and vinegar based items
chuck: pesto , tartare-should be kept in fridge but has egg in it, anything slightly mouldy or lactose based
smell it and see

PeaMcLean · 02/09/2008 21:58

Well, DH has just chucked out:

  • a jar of beetroot (half full but a month or two after sell by date)
  • a jar of tartare sauce (nearly finished),
  • a small jar of mustard (unopened and within sell by date),
  • a bottle of caesar salad dressing (to be fair, that probably needed to go)
  • a jar of mint sauce (6 months past sell by but in my mind lasts for ever)

Harpo, you can rescue them from my bin if you really want

He didn't even empty the jars for recycling

at mr pea's fridge frenzy

where are you pea? I'm a coming to get them

lilolilmanchester · 02/09/2008 22:24

if they look/smell/taste ok would keep them and I am paranoid about food hygiene. I am sure that when we were kids we'd keep jars of pickles from one Christmas to the next.

I know just what you mean lil, there was always a jar of "Noel's Capers" in my mum's fridge. Must have been there about 15 years altogether.

OP posts:
lilolilmanchester · 02/09/2008 22:32

maybe that's why they just don't taste the same these days!!!

muggglewump · 02/09/2008 22:35

If they look and smell OK I keep them. I never really take notice of dates though and I haven't killed us yet

fishie · 02/09/2008 22:41

capers siren call

mrmclean would be very shocked, my fridge is studded with pickles and sauces. caesar salad seems to keep forever and i have thrown that away in fear. not mustard though, i don't think it makes any difference.

PeaMcLean · 02/09/2008 22:45

I like "studded with pickles and sauces".

Like little jewels.

My fridge is now bereft. Like I've been robbed.
