Help Needed For the Recipe Section Please

We have a new basics part of the recipe section because we thought it would be a good idea to have a bit where you could go to for the grass roots, basic, how-to style recipes.

It is currently empty and whilst anyone is welcome to enter any of their basic recipes onto it, I am looking for ideas what type of basic recipes you would like to see so that I can find and enter them over the next couple of days.

I am thinking along the lines of
Vinaigrette
Stock
Bread
Mayo, that kind of thing, but I really need your ideas

Please
Thankyou

Qui-NOA! Huh! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! (sorry, am with Edwin Starr on this, but maybe I was cooking it wrong...)

gravy. Have always wanted to make it properly and tasted loads who can, but mine is crap.

Custard

Different salad dressings

Yes good idea, particularly with the current economic climate I think we should have a newsletter/article on the site dedicated to really thrifty recipes.

white/cheese sauce

MuchLessTiredNow · 02/09/2008 21:22

oooh, I can do idiot proof pastry. 8 oz plain flour, 2 oz lard, 2 oz butter, pinch of salt. Stick in a food processor and whizz until breadcrumbs then pour in 60mls cold water on low speed and continue until it
forms one lump. Scrape out, put in fridge for 1/2 hour then roll out. Easy as pie (pardon the pun)

I've got a fantastic receipe for fantastic choc chip brownies which always hit the spot & are quite economical & freeze well......

MuchLessTiredNow · 02/09/2008 21:23

thrifty and quick for after school teas, please

Furball · 02/09/2008 21:49

hoxtonchick - try this for a fab, quick and easy, no messing, no lumps, cheese sauce

hoxtonchick · 03/09/2008 09:06

thanks furball. i wasn't meaning for me actually, i love making white sauce (mostly as i like eating it ), & will happily stir my roux plus milk for hours. but it's a good one for a basic recipe section.

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/09/2008 09:08

One of the questions that is often asked here is what can and can't be frozen, or how to defrost stuff - so maybe a section on basic principles as well?

Overmydeadbody · 03/09/2008 12:03

oooh just seen this!

I suggested a basics section to MNHQ, I'm glad they listened!

I will go off and fill it now he he he

MFK Fischer's essay on 'how to cook a wolf' is interesting for thrifty eating... not that I'd ever actually follow her advice though!

Carmenere · 03/09/2008 13:20

I love MKF Fisher

me too. I've got the art of eating but sadly now out of print. actually picked it up while backpacking in Oz!

Am I missing something? I can't see any other section of the recipe forum.
