They are a bit of a gimmick. Grown with artificial heat and light so nothing like a plant grown in the earth. They slowly die once in a normal environment.

MrsJamin · 30/08/2008 20:38

Do you just get them from garden centres then? My basil plant is still going pretty strong, considering I'm the world's best plant killer.

lucysmam · 30/08/2008 20:43

oh. I am gutted! Could have had a quids worth of chocolate in my shopping instead but thought I'd get a basil plant and be productive! How about garden centre ones? as suggested by MrsJamin?

Just depends how they are grown. The season for basil is summer so maybe it was grown outdoors and so will be much more robust. Garden centre ones have more chance of being healthier plants I'd've thought. But still only a summer plant.

lucysmam · 30/08/2008 20:58

oh, wish I'd asked before buying now but never mind, you learn something new every day! I will invest in a garden centre one next time!

i always buy mine from waitrose
they last for ages and ages.

southeastastra · 30/08/2008 21:09

in my case, watch it die slowly

savoycabbage · 30/08/2008 21:09

I keep mine in a tray of water and wait till it grows massive and then make it into pesto and freeze the mixture.

lucysmam · 30/08/2008 21:10

lol southeast, it can't be that bad!!!

no waitrose near us amidaiwish unfortunately, its from Asda

Mine has lasted months, and I am usually useless at keeping a basil plant going. It was a supermarket plant. I just run it under the tap when it starts to wilt. Has been fine.

lucysmam · 30/08/2008 21:17

Snaf, you have restored my faith . . . a bit!

Hee hee, I saw you were thinking about growing onions or salad too on another thread (not stalking you I promise...have been up since half six with dc so have been reading all sorts of threads this morning!

lucysmam · 31/08/2008 10:27

nice early morning!! My lo had a lie in til half 7 for a change. I'm thinking about it yeah, just pil & my dad are being VERY un-cooperative and none of them will drive me to garden centre which we can't get to on the bus! & my local wilko's have stopped getting new planting stuff in so I may have to wait until oh's mate pops round in car and flutter eyelids lots & try get him to take me and the kids for a wander. Otherwise my plans to have something which resembles a well cared for pot garden will never take shape
