pretty much that really, what would you put in it? Am just curious as I'm doing stew one night this week but always end up with the same old stuff in mine
~carrotts
~onions
~leeks
~mushrooms
~spuds
& I wondered if there was anything I'm missing out on that's really nice in a stew!

Turkish fish stew

tomato bredie

Loads of different variations on BBC search engine.

These two look good.

lucysmam · 28/08/2008 19:57

the tomato bredie definately looks tasty. will add that to my book! not sure about fish though, just seems a bit 'wrong' (not sure if the right word) to have fish stew

It's a recipe from one of my Chinese books, lucysmam, which is why I was serving it with noodles!

And also, I forgot to add that you need to add 1/2 tsp of salt and black pepper to it.

Ahem Combustible, Shinyhappy is reet Lobbies is a type of stew peculiar to the Wigan 'suburb' (lol) of Leigh.
Indeed people from Leigh tend to be known as "Lobby Gobblers".

My favourite beef casserole;
Stewing steak,
Onion,
Carrots,
Thyme,
Redcurrant jelly
Good glug of red wine.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 29/08/2008 00:04

LOL Serin, I have to say I lived very close to Leigh and do remember the expression "Lobby Gobblers". (They seem rather partial to it in Tyldesley also if memory serves.. but I actually lived in Atherton.)

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 29/08/2008 00:07

Lobby however, remains an entrance hall which I would often tell the Wigan-types I lived amongst in the same breath as telling them that there is "..no such thing as a barm cake, that "ginnels" were called alley ways and that the world "school" does not end in oo!!!..."

They just used to call me a daft Southern cow and ask where the r in "bath" was then eh, eh???!

Carnival · 29/08/2008 00:09

a wee glug of worcestershire (sp??)sauce

solidgoldbrass · 29/08/2008 00:11

Cats
Squirrels
Stones
Fruit Shoots
Any MNer that annoys me
Anything that doesn't get out of the way quick enough

MKG · 29/08/2008 00:20

I mix in some soy sauce, marinara sauce and little beef broth for extra flavor. So good.

plasters

tazmosis · 29/08/2008 00:29

sweet potatoes, garlic, thyme and red wine.

The sweet potatoes kind of melt into the sauce if you put them in right at the start and thicken it as well as giving it a lovely flavour.

BloodySmartarse · 29/08/2008 00:29

hmmm, good stew stuff...

meat
dumplings
stock
veggies (various as mentioned in op)
barley
cornflour (to thicken)

mmmmmmmmm

BloodySmartarse · 29/08/2008 00:31

i rather likr the sweet potatoi thickener idea.

caramelised onions

or another thickener idea, as well as buildy-uppy stuff, is red lentils.

some kind of alcohol

lucysmam · 29/08/2008 08:27

yum! not too sure about Fruit Shoots or plasters solidgold & piratecat but will keep in mind in case I get stuck!

I have a lovely long list of stuff I've never put in a stew to try out & off to market for some of them tomorrow morning.

Thanks for suggestions everyone

My Beef stew is like everyone else is. Expect cerely as i hate it .

I make herb dumpings i just add 1/2 tsp of dried thyme to the mix.

piratecat · 29/08/2008 11:45

no prob, was in a silly(bored)mood.!!

stirlingmum · 29/08/2008 12:58

Dittany reminded me of a recipe I have used before, adding parsnips, along with other veg, adds a lovely flavour to it.

it is Muffin Topped Winter Stew and the topping looks heavy but actually goes light inside and crispy on top.

It is really tasty and makes lots!

lucysmam · 29/08/2008 14:03

stirling, the topping sounds a good idea, never tried anything like that before. Think I might give it a go on Sunday!

my children don't like tinned tomatoes, but never seem to have noticed the carton of passata that I throw in a stew . I second the suggestion of worcestershire sauce and sometimes put a big spoonful of dill mustard in - very tasty!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 29/08/2008 15:04

smoked bacon adds a nice flavour as well
