Do you think this is irresponsible?

Just noticed Greggs the baker round the corner from my work are advertising a special lunch deal - 2 x Jumbo Sausage Rolls, a can of coke and a doughnut for £2.

That doesn't seem to offer a healthy balanced diet to me. In fact I think it is outrageous that they can call it a meal, it is just a really unhealthy pig-out. They harp on about social responsibility on their website but obviously this doesn't extend to their customers.

Shall I complain to them?

I think some people would think that this is a perfectly ok lunch. I don't like the offer either, but I suppose that is because it reminds me that there are people who try and live off this stuff. Good luck to them ('cos they will bloody well need it!)

misdee · 14/02/2005 18:12

if it was alarge cornish pasty, bottle of water and iced doughnut i might be tempted

wheresmyfroggy · 14/02/2005 18:16

I can smell the judgement a mile of on this thread.
if i was in a low earning, hard manual labouring job an offer like this would be a lifeline to me. if the "wrong" people are tempted by this offer then that is not greggs fault, we pride ourselves with having freedom of choice, so lets not judge people who make different choices to us!

CarrieG · 14/02/2005 18:23

Yes, but you could get a mug of soup & a couple of granary rolls, followed by an apple & a banana from the nearest greengrocer's, for the same £2.

I'm not saying your hypothetical workman should, if what he fancies is sausage rolls & coke - but that it's not particularly good value anyway.

Fair enough Froggy (clambers down from high horse).

wheresmyfroggy · 14/02/2005 18:32

Was going to ask what the view was like from up on the moral highground

beansprout · 14/02/2005 18:35

Oh it's bloody marvellous and soooo straightforward!!

lunavix · 14/02/2005 18:36

misdee - there's no such thing as overweight when you are pg. Remember that

if you see my wife up there tell her dinners nearly ready

A friend of mine used to be the area manager for the Three Cooks chain of bakeries which is due to be bought out by Greggs and offers similar stuff. Their largest mark up is on sausage rolls which cost them approx 19p each to produce and which they can retail for about 95p. Also, as the sandwiches etc are made up in the shop on the day of sale there is no legal requirement to list the actual contents other than 'turkey salad sandwich' etc. My friend told me that the turkey that they use is only about 17% meat, the rest of made up of pea starch, fodder and chemicals. It seems absurd that bakeries are allowed to get away with such blatant mis-representation. God only knows how much meat there actually is in a sausage roll.

I don't object to any of the individual items in this lunch, but I do think that to promote them all together as a meal is irresponsible. I am NOT trying to be snooty ffs I had a hot dog for dinner last night at 11.30pm after the football! But I only had one and had a salad earlier.

Some people have no idea about nutrition, and to promote this load of old crap as a meal is not very fair IMO

Yes COD I am my dd's mother amazingly!

I love Greggs sausage rolls. I used to do a really physical job (only woman amonst 20 blokes) and on the odd occasion someone left the plant, especially on a cold day, a greasy sausage roll was great.
Probably not great for you every day, but we are creatures of choice.

CountessDracula · 15/02/2005 09:46

ok fine I shan't complain then. Blimey didn't realise there were so many crap-eaters on mumsnet! (me included after hotdog incident last night). For some reason I see you all as mung-bean eating types but I am obv wrong.

There are so many threads about "should my child be allowed crisps" and "do you only give your kids organic food". If this sort of crap keeps being peddled as a balanced meal all our little angels will grow up into big fat porkers!

You'd hate NZ CD,
Between 5 and 6 in the evening it is known on telly as the 'Pizza Haven' Hour ... (chain of pizza take aways) ... in that hour they advertise every kind of fast food chain and their meal deals ... it is terrible ....
Every macdonald's has a sign out advertising 2 Big Mac's for $6 (that is 2 pounds) ...
Fast food in NZ is a huge business, and obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes are the biggest killers (Type 2 diabetes being the biggest killer in NZ) ....

I would be outside with a placard (and a hotdog )

actually I quite fancy a sausage roll after all this talk!

beansprout · 15/02/2005 09:53

Am still laughing at "cack meal"!
CD - I have just finished my museli!! And I eat mung beans!!

jangly · 15/02/2005 09:54

I could happily eat that but I wouldn't!! Don't think it would be good for manual workers either. Building site workers already have high incidence of heart disease due to exposure to all weathers, no point in making it worse! Should come with a health warning! Don't think there's anything you can do about it though. There's plenty of health education stuff put out. Can't make people listen.

CountessDracula · 15/02/2005 09:55

Yes, but you could not actively promote it as a cheapie meal. Why not do a sandwich or salad, a bottle of water and a doughnut instead?
