Fgs, please help me make a decision on a first birthday cake. It shouldn't be this hard!

I want to make my ds's first birthday cake, it needn't be an incredibly big or fancy idea but I'm not 100% at the moment so can't think.

  1. I have a 1 lb loaf tin, a 2 lb loaf tin, and a couple of 6 or 7 inch round deep tins, as well as a medium lasagne dish and a small roasting tin which would make a sortof 7 inch rounded-square TV sort of shape.

  2. I'm going to do either a 8884 plain cake or the same but with the addition of some drinking chocolate.

3)I can ice it with either vanilla or chocolate buttercream, or coloured ready to roll icing if necessary, and decorated with writing icing pens/fondant icing/sweets/choc buttons or whatever. I'm pretty artistic so not daunted by decorating, but can't spend much.

  1. My ds likes: igglepiggle (but tbh I can't be bothered ordering blue food colouring online at a price £5 inc p+p!) and ITNG generally, rubbadubbers, dogs, and anything colourful. We don't want/like teddybears or anything dull, brown, grey etc. He is one, so could do a number 1 cake but would it be boring?

So, any ideas of what I can do? Any help appreciated as I just can't make a bloody decision.

wow - you did all that by hand - I am in total awe!

Thanks - it looked amazing and dd (aged 2 at the time) absolutely loved it.

Came on here to post what I did, and am now in awe of your cake-making skills!

I made a ladybird for DS (chocolate buttons for the spots, dontchaknow).

I've made my friend's wedding cake today, and am icing it tomorrow. It's not going to look anything like as professioal as some of these, though.

Littlefish · 01/08/2008 09:00

How are you decorating your friend's cake Booboodedoo?

Booboobedoo · 01/08/2008 11:19

It's chocolate (with home-made honeycomb) for the bottom layer, and lemon drizzle (sliced and sandwiched with lemon butter icing) for the top.

One straight on top of the other (using cakeboard/dowels etc).

I've bought ivory coloured icing to cover, and she wants baby blue and baby pink polka dots all over it.

And I've bought a blue velvet ribbon to cover up the rough edges make it look pretty.

Wish me luck!

Hi, wow, great cakes!! That cat and wool cake is awesome, must have taken you ages. Bet your dc were thrilled.

Good luck doing the wedding cake boobooma, the choc honeycomb layer sounds gorgeous!

I may post a pic of the final cake if it goes well but remember mine's going to be a simple spotty dotty first birthday one! Not a fab creation like those on this thread. That r2d2 was just amazing.

Oh James, you've got to post a picture - I'm sure it will look great. My dd loves looking back at pictures of her birthday cakes from each year.

Booboobedoo - that sounds delicious. Good luck!
