My ds (9) is like this. He is very skinny and burns energy at the rate of knots. He also reacts badly to running out of energy, so we like to keep him on an even keel. We found the most effective thing to do was to add two extra meals (dh is a bodybuilder, so eats 7 times a day, so not tricky for us to do). We therefore have 11sies and threesies. They aren't proper meals, but small meals with protein, fruit/veg and low GI carbs (like a small whole-meal cheese sandwich with carrots, or a slice of pizza). These are at the table, with a drink. Then he doesn't get any other snacks, eats a proper helping at lunch and supper and doesn't beg all the time

You may find this sort of approach helps with the pickiness because he should be hungry when he is eating - lots of kids (and adults too) eat when they are bored. Plus it makes him have a drink with the meal, which again reduces the hunger (some kids say they are hungry when they are really thirsty).

Eating more meals is a good way to keep blood sugars stable, and can actually help with losing weight (if anyone in your family wants to that is).

At school he has a morning snack time (we are in the States so send it in ourselves, he gets fruit and something more sustaining to go with it - cheese and crackers or something like that) and something when he gets out, so not much different from the holidays.

my hollow legged child is very skinny aswell, it is a constant source of irritation to me (fat) and his brother (generously built!) who would both like to just stuff our faces all day but cant because we would end up the size of houses. brother isnt often hungry, he just likes eating so i am the other way round with him, trying to discourage boredom eating. not easy when brother is hungry all the time, he sees food and wants it for himself.

thats a really good idea nooka, might give that a go. i think he would eat more meals, i guess i caould cook too much at one meal and serve it up again, he doesnt mind having the same thing again and again and again etc..

fab ideas on here, hadnt thought of corn on the cob, that takes quite a while to eat aswell so i might get more than 30 seconds break before he is asking for more.

am sticking all these on shopping list now, much appreciated!

Oh, and don't feel bad about saying no! We often tell ds that he should have eaten more at lunch (or whatever the last meal was) if he says he is hungry less than an hour after eating. and we tell him to wait if it's less than an hour or so 'til the next meal.
