I'm stuck in a food rut and am increasingly reliant on cheese & eggs (which I really dislike).

I need some more ideas of what I can make without it being chickpea or lentil chili/ lasagna/ stew

Please help!

Yes, English biscuits, Toot. I may have been here for a long time, but I will never understand American biscuits. Especially with 'gravy' for breakfast. Thanks for the recipe.

Scrambled Tofu sounds a bit hardcore for me. I don't know if I am brave enough yet. In a co-op, Takver? I'm intrigued

Oh yes, scrambled tofu is v. good! Mash it with tamari and turmeric and black pepper and things. Yum.

So what are American biscuits like? I imagine them scone-like but softer. Maybe like drop scones? I remember in To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem "tore" one in half. You certainly can't tear an English biscuit.

TooTicky · 24/07/2008 22:32

fgs what? Call them patties if you'd rather.

TooTicky · 24/07/2008 22:33

Sounds twee though.

I hate the word 'patty'. It's right up there with 'moist'. Burgers much better, I think.

Yes American biscuits are like lighter, fluffier scones. Always savoury and really dry. I don't like them. Very odd.

I know the scrambled tofu sounds hardcore, but it really is nice and also IME fussy-child friendly (I know some pretty wierd children though).
Underrated, co-op is housing co-op - just realised it sounds like we live in the supermarket . So usually I'm trying to cook for about 10 of us - tends towards veggy slop as a lowest common denominator unfortunately, thank god we are into the tomato & courgette season now.

Cool Takver - I've always thought it could be good to live in a co-op. Lots of difficulties too, I imagine (like veggie slop, I suppose), but it is a good idea. I have been eyeing up one here.

Might brave the scrambled tofu.

Yes lots of difficulties (not only veggie slop but parsnip quiche - more than once), but advantages too, not the least that we live on an 85 acre farm and pay £400 a month for rent bills & most food (even if it isn't always exactly what you might choose )

UnderRated · 25/07/2008 18:20

Oh, parsnip quiche has put me right off the idea

My boys are lactose intolerant - I got a really, really great book for Christmas you can substitute meat with tofu and quorn. The book is called The Everyday Dairy Free Cookbook and it's great!!
