I think it depends on how strict you are - if turning on/off lights is a sin, then surely asking/paying (as people used to pay my father for this) someone else to commit the sin, even if they're not Jewish, is still a sin?

As usual, interpretation is everything.

The English Orthodox bloke I knew interpreted the no-mixed-fibres rule as only applying to major purchases (e.g. suits), not regular clothing - think this was normal in his community.

You see, I always thought that too, that if a person considers something a sin then getting another to do it is also a sin regardless of whether they believe or not (this would be true for a muslim).
But then I thought perhaps it does not extend to non-jews in jewish sabbath terms.

My parents live in an ultra orthodox neighbourhood we're prolly one of a a very few non-jewish neighbours in the area.

I must add we do not accept nor expect financial compensation for assisting our neighbours.

I didn't think you got paid!

I'm sure there's room for a whole "the book says 'honour the sabbath and keep it holy' - I honour it in my way, they honour it in theirs" argument here.

I know plenty of orthodox jews that have lights, and otherelectrical equipmenton timer switches to alow them to work on Friday nigh.

Ineresting bit of useless info. Did you know under jewish rules it is still (although I doubt practised) forbidden for a jewish wife to have a gold crown in her mouth as, if it were to fall out on the sabbath she would not be allowed to pick it up (in keeping with no work/worklike tasks can be performed) and because it is her husbands hard earnt money that paid for it sh ould be in a qundry what to do!!
