Just started weaning - reaction to pear normal or not?

I have just started weaning my daughter (1 week) and she was doing fine on baby rice. I introduced some pureed pear and she has had an upset stomach (runny poos and doing more than normal, about 4/5 times a day) and what look like blisters (but not) on her bottoom. Someone pointed out it could be the acid in the pears that is causing the soreness on her bottom?? She has gone completely off her milk too, but I think that is more because her stomach is gurgling away etc. What I really need to know is this just a normal reaction for the first time to fruit or does it sound like she's allergic to pears? My husband and I don't have any allergies at all.

Grateful for any comments/advice. Thanks.

Hi deeldee,

My Dd is now 6.5 months so am now into full swing of weaning! How old is your Dd?

Have not had any problems with pear but sounds like this does not agree with your Dd. The bottom soreness could be coincidence but I would try something else like apple for now and maybe try pear again in a weeks time. If the same thing happens I would suggest pear is a no go for now - you could always try again later.

When I started weaning I thought that fruit and veg should be good for them but when their digestive systems are still maturing it can sometimes be too much.

Stupid question but did you cook the pear?

Regarding going off milk, sounds like upset tummy had put her off - I would maybe try offering cooled boiled water if not drinking milk as this has helped my Dd in past.

Although am not an expert, will gladly help if I can.

deeldee - my dd also had a reaction to pear in the first weeks of weaning, almost exactly as you describe. And it happened with all fruit - I think as you say that it is the acidity. She is now 8 months and still has slightly runny poo when I give her fruit, but doesn't seem uncomfortable.

I would stick to bland veg like carrot and cauli for the time being and try fruit again in a couple of months time.

I agree, it certainly sounds like it doesn't suit her at the moment, but that could just be her system trying to cope with something new. My DD had a bit of a problem with apple to start with as the acid content is rather high. I would suggest going back to the rice until she settles.
My DD now nearly 5m went off her milk to for a few days, only taking 2oz at some feeds, but it soon comes back (your DD might be full of gurgling wind, so be prepared for a fruit explosion). After our apple problem, I introduced pear in small amounts with rice, only about 1tsp pear with 1portion of rice. I still give her fruit with rice and veggies on their own (I started with carrot, very safe but nice and orange!!).

Good luck deeldee, I hope your DD becomes more comforatble soon.

Hi MrsSimmy DD is 17 weeks and yes I did cook the pear.

Will try carrot tomorrow and then when I re-introduce fruit will use your tip sueanne and mix with rice.

Thks.

a good way to treat the botty blisters is with the boots anti fungal cream, available over the counter. It's fine for babies and I use it in my little ones nappy area whenever she gets a bit spotty down there - usually if I havent caught a poo in time and its festered a bit on her skin ! also if she has had diarrhoea, the anti fungal plus metanium works wonders.

Hi deeldd,

I onced worked at a day care center and had a toddler who was unable to have pear or any citrus (I beleive) drinks because it made him have very bad diaper rash.

Hi Deeldee, My ds2 also wasn't keen on fruit when he started weaning. I remember reading somewhere that fruit can often cause acid imbalance in very young children and that vegetables are generally better for weaning. Anyway, carrots did the trick for me -- and especially if you steam them, they come out nice and sweet. I'm going to try sweet potato next week.

Hi deeldee,

Has your DD's stomach settled down at all? I hope so. It's not very nice seeing your little one being uncomfortable, especially when you feel that you might have caused it.

Fingers crossed for the carrot!

My DD really loves her food now and looks like a little bird waiting for a worm (head up, mouth wide open).

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

We have tried the carrott at her 11am feed and this has not caused her any problems. She has also started taking all her milk during the day again and the baby rice before bed. The blotches on her bum have also gone.

The only other problem is that it has messed her sleeping up a bit. She was sleeping through until 7am but now wakes at 5. This hopefully will settle down now she is eating properly during the day.

Next up is sweet potatot...

Thks for advice and speak soon.

Sweet potato...there have been a few threads recently where some babies have not 'agreed' with sweet potato. I tried my little dd on it 2 days ago and she came out in a rash and was not very pleasant down below! So I've gone back to the tried and tested.
The veggies my DD is ok on are Carrot, butternut squash, normal potato, parsnip and oddly enough swede.
If I were you I'd wait and just feed her the carrot/rice until she has recovered from the pear incident.

My dd 6 mths loves apple pureed and I mash banana through a strainer which she also loves. Carrots are her favourite vege. I started off very slowly with lots of baby rice and little bits of fruit and vege.. then increased. I sometimes use the Heinz simply fruits/veges - organic range and there the pear is mixed with other fruits. My dd has had no reaction to those. You might like to try a porridge mix. I used a creamed porridge mix with fruit for breakfast and she loves that also.
