Outside of cake overcooked. What do i change?

just made a madeira cake - inside was cooked to perfection but the outside was a bit thick and overcooked. do i reduce the cooking time or reduce the heat next time? or reduce the cooking and increase the heat??

Lower in the oven tends to make it cook more evenly in mine.

I have a very burney oven.

You could try surrounding the tin with thick tall paper. A bit of a faff, though

Reduce heat, check the amount of sugar. Too much sugar makes cakes burn.

I would say heat also, try a lower heat for longer if needed.

Cooler and longer, seconding people here. You can also loosely cover the top of the cake with foil.

wrap your cake tin in a damp tea towel.

the outside is heating too quickly I think and you need to slow it down.

There is a good Cake SOS website, if only I could find it....
