Inspiration needed - important lunch!

I can't cook very well, but I'm hoping you can all help.
I'm a single mum to a 4yo DD and I'm introducing her to my new fella this weekend. We're having lunch together before going off for a fun afternoon.

I don't want to lose new bloke through food poisoning, nor have him running for the hills when he tastes my cooking.

DD loves pasta; new fella doesn't like fish. I've been thinking along risotto lines?

Any thoughts on what is absolutely fool-proof, tasty, impressive, and will ensure we all live happily ever after?!

Spag Bol or pasta with tomato sauce would be easier than risotto if you're not into cooking. If pasta's your dd's favourite then you know she'll be ok and do it with salad and garlic bread to make it more interesting for the grown ups.

Hope you have a lovely time

Lasagne should be fool-proof. Serve with salad and garlic bread!

Could you not just do a casual lunch of baguettes, humous, salads, cheese, olives and cold meats?

If you can't cook tha well and don't often make risotto then I'd steer clear of it to be honest.

If you want a hot meal go for spag bol as pinkspotty suggested.

Or jacket potatoes with fillings and salad?

Start as you mean to go on! What would you usually make as a nice meal for you and DD? IF you make loads of effort now and produce something exotic and wonderful, he'll think that's the norm!

Having said that, lasagne is a good idea because it's easy to prepare in advance and just bung in the oven.

Risotto is a very last minute labour intensive meal - all that stirring - so you'd have to be tending to that rather than chatting.

Yes, agree with Ceis, what would you normally have for lunch?
