Looking for slow cooker recipes that aren’t stew/casserole!

I’m looking for new recipes for the winter which I can cook in the slow cooker while I’m in work. We are tired of the usual stewed veg and meat.

Have tried beef stroganoff and curries, is there anything new you can suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Felafel and creme brulee, that's not a combination that I've ever considered.

Tasty, dip the felafel into the CB 😉

Watching for any vegetarian recipes...

I do a veggie shepherds pie filling in ours, but hardly ever use it otherwise.

You can make lovely veggie curries or black bean chilli in it, or goulash with lots of red peppers, butternut squash and chickpeas instead of the beef.

@Hedjwitchplease tell me more 🤔 I’ve been eyeing up proving ovens but this may save some pennies and kitchen space!

I think my problem is that so many of the veggie things rely on tinned tomatoes and I don't like them much.

Sweet potato or chick pea curry- add veg, curry paste and a tin of coconut milk

This is delicious with rice or noodles https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/braised-beef-onepot

Chinese chicken- chicken thighs, hoisin, garlic, ginger, honey, I add a chilli. Serve with spring onions and noodles or rice.

Quite frequently do a whole roast chicken in it.

Great for casual entertaining, when you fancy a warming beef stew but with some more vibrant flavours

Rare Roast Beef.

I absolutely did not believe it was possible. But jeez, it actually works. Truly, beef that is pink in the middle, all the way through. The lower temperature helps to make sure that the heat spreads slowly, but evenly through the meat, rather than a hotter oven where the edges get very hot and end up brown and dry while the middle is still raw.

I’ve not attempted it without a meat thermometer. From my notes, I pulled it out when the internal temp reached 55 degrees and rested it for 30+ minutes.

I only tried it for the first time last week but it did work. Put hot water in your slow cooker and put it on low while you knead the dough. Empty out the water and dry slow cooker thoroughly. Put in some greaseproof paper and drop the dough in. Drape a teatowel over the pot and put the lid on. Turn power off and leave to prove.

I think I will experiment a bit and different slow cookers have different heat levels, but it did work.

A couple that work really well while you are out, and feel different from stew:

Slow cooker lasagne is my favourite cheat. I layer a meat or vegetable tomato sauce with fresh pasta sheets and plenty of grated cheese, finishing with cheese on top, then leave it on low. It holds its shape better than you would expect if you let it rest for ten minutes before serving, and a green salad alongside makes it feel like a proper dinner rather than another pot of something brown.

Meatballs in tomato sauce are another easy one. I brown them first if I have time, but they are fine straight in with tinned tomatoes, garlic, oregano and a pinch of sugar. Serve with spaghetti or in crusty rolls, so everyone can help themselves when they get in.

And for a winter treat, a steamed-style pudding works surprisingly well in a slow cooker. A simple sponge batter in a greased pudding basin, covered well and cooked in a little water around the outside, comes out soft and comforting with custard. It is a nice change from always using the slow cooker for the main course.
