Depends.

Stowells, Barramundi 'n' friends = shite

But...you can get really ace mahoosive boxes in France from wine cellars, red ones usually. They're nice.

I get boxed rosé when we are having a bbq and it is more than drinkable. I am in France though.

I always buy boxed for my own use at home, as I often just want a glass and no more, (which is impossible with a bottle!).

the decent wines are fine.....less decent aren't too bad, and the supermaerkets 'house red/huse white' are fairly good.....definitely good enough for the glass with dinner in any case (as long as your palate is not too used to the very decent wine)

money wise I find they are much better value, and it means that when friends come over, I don;t mind buying bottles as I class them as more of a treat then.

I do however like to use red wine in my cooking.......boxed wine is a must for then as it is less of a wrnech than opening up a bottle and not wanting red that night, and so possibly wasting a bottle.

Wine is wine is wine.

The only reason I don't buy boxed wine is because its too easy to just have a little top up. I need the bottle looking accusingly at me, the clink of glass hitting glass in the recycling box.

I buy for BBQ's only and my liver thanks me for it.

Psychomum5 · 01/07/2008 08:04

but don;t you find that you open a bottle and then that you have to finish it???

with a box, I can ignore the call better (altho I do find the call is every night rather than occasionally)

sagacious · 01/07/2008 08:05

I hide the bottle in the kitchen.

Its when I feel I have to finish the wine box I'm in trouble

Psychomum5 · 01/07/2008 08:08

lol.....no, at the mo for me, the pull of a bottle is harder to resist. a bottle is far more portable and can go with me room to room....a box however....that has it's spot in the fridge, and I cannot be arsed to move sometimes find myself far too comfortable once I am sat down, which is why I find it easier

sagacious · 01/07/2008 08:10

Buy uncomfortable chairs

Problem solved

Psychomum5 · 01/07/2008 08:13

are you trying to turn me into a psychoalchohlic?????

RusselBrussel · 01/07/2008 09:50

Fine if you buy a decent wine.

My fave is white zinfandel by Gallo, dh and I would share most fri/sat/sun evenings.
We recently discovered it in a box at Costco - utterly brilliant.
We actually now stop at a glass instead of having to finish the bottle.
So we drink less. (which can't be a bad thing)
And it tasts exactly the same as the same wine in a bottle.

My only concern is from a recycling pov. The box can be recycled but the sealed bag thing cannot.

RusselBrussel · 01/07/2008 09:51

durr, dh and I would share a bottle most fri etc etc.

BecauseImWorthIt · 01/07/2008 09:51

Am very impressed that you buy boxes to control the alcohol intake!

Don't think it would work in this house.

BananaPudding · 01/07/2008 15:30

i'm glad to know lots of others find it nice too. DH made such fun if me when i came home with a big old box of wine last night. He thinks they are crap and trashy. Didn't stop him having two glasses though

I thought it was a good idea as it's hot as hell here and I only ever want cold drinks, sometimes I only want a little bit, and also, it was only $10 for 5 liters!
