Anyone who grows their own fruit and veg should know about this safety issue

Have just been sent this link to an article in Sunday's Observer about a Dow herbicide that is used on grass getting into the food chain via silage and horse manure - it damages/kills homegrown fruit and veg (apart from courgettes, oddly) and it is recommended by the RHS and others that any dodgy fruit or veg in gardens or allotments should not be eaten as the safety (or lack of) of this chemical is unknown in the food chain.

Brilliant! Thanks for the heads up.

I am thankful that I started later in the year with my allotment and havent had a chance to dig in any soil conditioners etc.

Mind you, I havent noticed any problems with other plot holders on our allotment, but we are a great deal further south from those places listed as affected.

have added to my blog too - thank you!

That is pretty shocking I have to say. I don't understand why its not more widespread in the news.
Am thankful that haven't used any manure this year just home made compost.

oh chuffing norah that's terrifying. I manured my plot for the first time this year Can't see any 'symptoms' though....I feel so sorry for anyone affected - having an allotment is such hard work. If I was told that all my blood sweat and tears (and money)was ending in nothing to eat and I couldn't grow anything else for a year I would be spitting feathers.
