Do you make an effort to give your dcs foods that you don't like?

I like most foods, but there are some things that I never buy or cook.

For example, I love fish, but never eat seafood (mussels, prawns, etc). I don't like mushrooms unless their taste and texture is obliterated by chopping and frying in garlic butter, so I never buy these either.

Question is, do you think I will be doing a diservice to my dcs by not trying them with as many foods as poss?

I have noticed that food dislikes seem to be passed down the generations.

My dds love fish and my dh quite likes it. I will eat it but not a big fan, but I do serve it fairly often and let them see me eat a bit.

Personally we feel it is a good thing (in our house) to serve lots of things even things I am not keen on myself. For example I eat broccoli because the girls like it and it is good for you.

My sil is the opposite. Her dd (7) threw a strop recently at being offered cherries. I asked my dd (4) if she had ever had cherries - she hadn't but did eat some at that point. Sil said "oh she's never had them" - odd imo that you dislike something when you have never tried it!

To a degree - I will feed the girls carrots (they love them) even though I hate them! But I draw the line at swede, I can't stand the smell of it cooking.

Also won't feed them liver.

I cook my children meat although myself and dh don't eat it.

So the consensus seems to be that I should make a bit more effort

All the time. I'm vegetarian but dd likes meat and as she doesn't like eggs or cheese I think she needs the protein until she's old enough to decide if she wants to be vegetarian. Also I'm not keen on fruit or fruit juice and dd eats tons of it. We both love vegetables though.

I hate chocolate [no I'm not fibbing] and somehow they have managed to develop a liking for it without me!
Healthy stuff I don't like I do buy like pineapple or mango, but I do make it clear that it's ok for them to have likes/dislikes too. ds2 hates eggs and that's fine.
My friend's always complaining about her dc not trying new stuff, but she's a vegetarian who doesn't like eggs or quorn which is expressing a pretty srong dislike of foods imo!

I cant stand bananas. When the kids were little I had to peel them with a knife so I didnt actually touch them, then had to wash my hands to get rid of the smell.
I must have done an OK job though as they will eat as many bananas as they are allowed now.

Oh missmama I'm with you on that front, I can't stand bananas but was lucky my mum loves bananas so gave them to my dd for me, and since she was old enough to peel them her self she has done so (thank god as I can't stand even the smell)

Now mushrooms and grape fruit..... yuk yuk yuk.

Dd has tried most things and has a really good range of tastes so can't of harmed her too much

If I only gave DD things I like I'd be weaning her onto cake! Seriously I'm starting weaning in the next couple of weeks and cooking vegetables that I've never touched before. I don't want her to end up as fussy as me.
