Get thee to Sainsbury's and buy the anti pasti jars - roasted artichokes, mushrooms, peppers.

The deli counter do Milano salami (which needs to be sliced paper thin for maximum taste) and mortadella (sliced thin also). Sometimes my husband will go to the continental shop to get these if he has time.

Tuna fish with beans - canned tuna mixed with fagioli beans, lots of lemon juice, salt, pepper and chopped parsley.

Thinly sliced tomatoes topped with buffalo mozzarella and basil, trickle of oil.

Tinned or jars of anchovies.

Selection of olives.

Yes I second Bellavitas suggestions. I currently have a thing for fried chunks of chorizo with crusty bread.
Also baba ganoush, the roasted aubergine dip with garlic and lemon juice is fab.

Oh I would probably buy some really nice bread to mop up the oil juices from the peppers, mushrooms etc.

i would also do slices of melon too

Lidl do some good stuff, spicy peppers stuffed with cream cheese, all different hams etc.

Make some little bruschettas, top with cream cheese and smoked salmon, and chopped tomatoes and basil. I found some ready made bruschetta in M&S, and their smoked salmon was on offer too. It was absolutely delish.

Or put slivers of salmon out so your guests can assemble their own.

Sometimes I put some soft cheese on an anti-pasti plate. Something like a camembert which is creamy and oozes is lovely with the spicy stuff.

Olives, chargrilled peppers, onions in balsamic vinegar (and use the vinegar for dipping bread in too).

Don't go too mad on bread, go for crackers or thin toasts, it will be too bulky and filling.

I would like to point out that I x-posts and did not intend to contradict anyone about bread

Nigella's moonblush tomatoes.

Long red peppers, stuffed with feta and red onion and lemon juice, drizzled with olive oil and baked.
