I recently purchased this book on ebay and would love to hear from anyone who has made any of the recipes from the book and what they thought of them.

I'm a complete beginner to cooking/baking and the recipes seem fairly simple but I'd appreciate reviews of the recipes.

The banana loaf cake is great, and very easy.

Will check which other recipes I have made and get back to you.

I made the gooey chocolate puddin. It's pretty good, (and easy), but the quantities for four people makes enough for at least 8.

I also made "Dave's date slice". Absolutely yummy, but should be named Dave's datey crumbly mixture. We had to eat it with a spoon.

However, the "Real chicken nuggets" were "dry and horrid". according to my son. I agreed wholeheartedly.

Thankyou Ming and Choccy, looking forward to reading more reviews.

I'm considering tackling the gooey chocolate sponge or iced apple sponge with real custard tomorrow.

I tried her lemon/chicken/rice thing and, using her quantities, it was just too lemony for small children.
Kids weren't impressed.
I think her puddings are best.

Agree with choccypig, the date slice didn't slice it just fell apart!

expatinscotland · 27/06/2008 21:39

i don't like the puds because nearly all of them begin with 'sift the flour'.

no, i'm not sifting jack shit.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 27/06/2008 21:41

Do you buy ready-grated cheese expat?

expatinscotland · 27/06/2008 21:43

No.

But believe you me, there are way too many great puds out there to waste time on ones that call for sifting.

The only time I sift is icing sugar to beat into buttercream icing or over cakes or biscuits.

expatinscotland · 27/06/2008 21:43

I'm lactose-intolerant and don't buy cheese at all.

falcon · 27/06/2008 21:50

I'm a freak I think, I rather enjoy sifting.

Expat, did you see my q, re are you accepting 'blue' clothes ?

falcon · 27/06/2008 21:55

And no that isn't a euphemism

I don't like this book for proper meals tbh - it is mainly full of desserts that we don't often have.

We tried the beanburgers and they were bland/nasty - the kids didn't eat them (but loved the spicy beanburgers I made from a MN recipe).

We also tried that hidden veg pie thing (can't remember name) - that was alright I suppose.

I haven't bothered cooking any other recipes as they aren't really appealing to me, and I have more healthy recipes in my AK Favourite Family Recipes book.

ProfessorGrammaticus · 27/06/2008 22:00

I quite like sifting too

Washersaurus · 27/06/2008 22:06

I thought you only had to sift 'cheap' flour these days?

falcon · 27/06/2008 22:08

I sift all of my dry ingredients.
