RambleOn · 26/06/2008 22:55

Was going to say mint, but that always runs riot in the planter, taking over everything else.

Great in a Pimms though

LyraSilvertongue · 26/06/2008 22:56

Mint, thyme and chives.

thumbwitch · 26/06/2008 22:57

I had a whole fish in an Italian restaurant that had been cooked with a whole sprig of thyme inside. Delicious.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 26/06/2008 23:03

that sounds nice, does thyme also get used on lamb and roast pots?

anyone know if i can grow these herbs in the same large planter with strawberrys?

Yeah, you can mix them. Thyme is fab. You can put it with most things. I often use mine with chicken, or in stews. Also, I've chopped them finely and sprinkled them over croutons before baking/frying.

Chives are great - can go in salads, in sour cream, potato salad - yum, or to give anything a mild onion flavour. AND you can snip them up and freeze them and they stay perfect. AND they are perennial.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/06/2008 23:10

chives and thyme go well in risottos too.

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 26/06/2008 23:12

vvvqv when you say yeah you can mix em, do you mean strawbrrys and herbs?

ok thymes on the list now too.

i didn't think i liked chives but i love onion

what shall i pick for the last space?

Yep you can mix strawbs and herbs. Although you'd be best off putting several strawberry plants together in their own planter

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/06/2008 23:15

chives.

I'm telling you, they are perfect.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/06/2008 23:15

AND they produce pretty pink flowers too

milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 26/06/2008 23:16

why would that be better vvvq?

OP posts:
milkgoddessmakesthefinestmilk · 26/06/2008 23:17

ok then chives it is.

I know you've decided on chives but one last bid for coriander - it is used a lot in curries/ Indian dishes and is also great in green salads; plus we often use it instead of parsley as a garnish on pasta dishes; and it works well on salmon and in herb crusts on lamb.

Chives are probably easier to keep alive though. Keep an eye on the rosemary, I have had it in a mixed herb planter before and it is the only thing that survived and took over completely.

LyraSilvertongue · 26/06/2008 23:36

Coriander is vile

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/06/2008 23:38

BEcause then you'd get more strawberries

I LOVE coriander, but it's a real love or hate herb.

woodstock3 · 28/06/2008 21:02

i vote for tarragon - i only planted it as an afterthought but use it loads, brilliant with fish and chicken. be warned oregano grows like mad, it has taken over my herb bed and cant think of enough things to do with it (oregano recipes anyone?)
