How can I reliably turn a shop-bought cake purple?

I’m wanting to make a shop bought cake that’s one of those DIY / Decorate yourself purple, how can I do it? Would an edible glitter spray work? If so any recommendations? I have one chance to do it so needs to be relatively reliable though not overly fussed if it’s patchy to be honest.

Thanks all!

ill try buying a naked one and wrapping rolled icing on to it, failing that a white one would have to do!

You can paint on to white roll out icing with purple gel food colouring which has been watered down a bit. I have done it. You wont get very even coverage without a sprayer but it will be fine for a kids bday

I would say buy the M&S buttercream one and then add different purple sweets and buy a purple cake topper!

another thing I like to do is buy white chocolate fingers and put them around the cake and then add a bow around the cake 💜

Id probably make some purple fondant, peel off the existing fondant and slap.it on

Or put purple fondant over the buttercream?
I’d recommend using gloves when working purple food dye into white fondant, I speak from experience!

Naked cake and purple ganache, it’s more forgiving and tastier

Get some purple
smarties to decorate a white cake?

VividDeer · 03/08/2026 20:52

I'd just use a cake collar

Purple fondant- roll it out, slap it on, smooth it over. Dead easy.
