Smartish, but toddler-friendly, restaurant in London ?

Am looking to book a lunch table for MIL's 50th birthday. We'd like to go somewhere decent (think Sheekeys, but not there, as apparently we've been too often for it to be special ) but I'm not sure which restaurants in this bracket are ok with (or at least not actively hostile to) toddlers. Any ideas?

Locanda Locatelli is supposedly very child-friendly (Locatelli himself has young children and is very pro small children in proper restaurants)

PerkinWarbeck · 24/06/2008 19:26

thank-you both

I was a little bit underwhelmed with the food at St. John, but realise I am in a minority of one.

I have just had a browse of the menus for both Moro and Locanda Locatelli and they both look great.

Any more ideas?

The Boxwood Cafe is pretty good - food is very nice and the staff are uber child friendly. Food gets brought promptly, they whisk away dropped spoons and replace them instantly and are very tolerant of noise and general mayhem whilst still maintaining an air of decorum.
I heard a rumour it was closing down, I hope not as it's our staple "posh restaurant with smalls".

Giraffe are good, but more casual.

PerkinWarbeck · 24/06/2008 21:11

We love giraffe, but fancied something a bit smarter for a big occasion.

I think Locanda Locatelli and the Boxwood Cafe are my favourites so far.

The Depot in in Barnes/sheen, if you're that way - has lovely views, lovely food and very tolerant to children.

hoxtonchick · 24/06/2008 21:16

i have taken my children to moro & fifteen & no one batted an eye. the waiting staff were friendly at both place. the food at fifteen is probably more child friendly.

Been to Sheeky's a few times - mostly fishy dishes, but very accommodating, friendly, and you could order outside the menu also.

DOOOH... didn't read the bit about Sheekys on your OT... contact lenses hurting now! xx

not sure if you want n or s london but franklins in east dulwich lovely food (not dissimilar idea to st john, very british and meat orientated) and they were utterly brilliant with a rampaging ds.

PerkinWarbeck · 29/06/2008 17:14

Franklins! Haven't been there for a long while, but it's just a stroll down the road. I shall inflict DD upon them soon.

Café Anglais is nicely posh, certainly good enough for a MIL's 50th (God you're young I'm just thinking about what to do for dh's 50th ), and always lots of children there at lunch on a weekend. (Are you going to do a weekend? - not sure what it would be like on a weekday.)

Once when dh took our two (9 and 7) there, there was a rather good magician touring the tables - apparently standard weekend thing. However, another time, though they asked if he'd be there again & booking person said yes, he wasn't. Children bit disappointed.

With a toddler, you might want to be sure of a bit of entertainment - so worth triple-checking.

I'm looking for a central London restaurant which will really impress 8 and 10 year old girls. I want them to have a real sense of occasion. Any suggestions?
