Food hygiene law flouted ?

DH bought a loaf from a small convenience store today.
The tie around the top that should display the use/bbe date has been deliberately cut short to remove the date.
This is surely illegal ?
If so, to whom should I report it ?

How do you know deliberately?

BeSharpHelper · 25/06/2026 19:11

Is it not printed elsewhere on the packaging ?

Iloveeverycat · 25/06/2026 19:12

No it might have happened at the factory. Just ask for it to be replaced. I always check the date on bread even in a supermarket.

It's a very obvious neat cut.
Pre-packed bread is always in the same packaging, with the date on the affixed label.
We always check , but DH was in a hurry, in a far away location, & did not notice.

Possibly your dh picked up one out of date or close to
knew you’d be pissed about it that he hadn’t checked before buying
so cut it off!!

It would always be a neat cut though? I don’t think they tear them off in the factory with their teeth. Im sure it’s slightly annoying but if it’s not green I would eat it and not over think it too much . If your concerned it’s not going to last out it in the freezer and use from frozen .

Bread has a best before date, not a use by date. This means its a quality issue not a food hygiene issue. You don't have to put a best before date on the packaging, but if there is one, It is illegal to remove it. It is perfectly legal to sell food after the best before date has expired (but not a use by date)

You could complain to trading standards, but I doubt they'll do a great deal

Our local supermarket pack there bakery items and seal them with a short piece of tape.
