Recommendations for BBQ fish

Im hosting a BBQ for about 10 girlfriends next week. We usually tend to eat “girl food” ie salads and veggie stuff (only 2 are really veggie) and occasionally someone will make something with meat but thats rare (because it is expensive)
i would like to grill some fish on the BBQ but i have no idea where to start…
i dont like salmon. What can i do? Whats easy to do when hosting? How do you actually cook it?
thanks in advance

Girl food? Wtf?

Girl foodConfused.

Yeah- girl food is a bit of a messed up phrase- esp coming from a woman.

But get grilling net thing. You could use frozen portioned white fish to keep costs down.

thanks for the monkfish @Forgottenmyphone it looks great!
i used “girl food” because we do eat pretty salads that we don’t really eat with our families (for example my kids turn up their noses to anything with more than 2 colours!)

Well mine don’t, they’re still very much boys. Such a weird thing to say.

Tuna steaks are great on the bbq, or Thai prawns, just remember fish cooks really quickly

Crummles1 · 21/06/2026 17:20

🙄@ girl food and pretty salads

Monkfish is not readily available and is expensive, and tuna steaks are expensive too

Jerk style fish or tandoori fish etc would be cheaper, but are usually bbq'd whole so I suspect not your thing

I’ve done a seafood bake like this one on the bbq before but you do need a bbq that you can control the heat on. We have a big green egg but might work if you have a gas one too.

Get some of this https://www.lakeland.co.uk/74234/magic-non-stick-bbq-liners-for-gas-and-charcoal-grills-pack-of-2

Use it to cook Salmon Side down (skin gets crispy), king prawns marinated in garlic & chilli oil, scallops etc

I think bbqing the fish might turn it into a man’s food. Better stick to poaching it, do you have a fish kettle?

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 25/06/2026 16:07

One of the best fish for bbq'ing is mackerel. Either whole or fillets. It's a firm, meaty fish that will hold together really well.
Tesco used to do mackeral fillets ready prepared with ginger, and red chilli that were absolutely delicious. Not sure if they do them anymore as there are so few fresh fish counters like they used to have.
Easy to do your own though, one or two fillets per person, some finely chopped red chilli, some grated fresh ginger and as little sesame oil as possible to coat them all. Let them marinade overnight, put them on the bbq skin side down, flip over after about 90 seconds and give them another minute!

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 25/06/2026 16:10

Whole Sardines are also a favourite. Same cooking as above, and use whatever marinade takes your fancy.
The best ones I ever had were butterflied and stuck 2 or 3 at a time onto these skewers, and just had some sea salt thrown at them while they were cooking. I still dream about them...

I guess it really depends on what kind of fish you'd have reasonable access to. I barbecue whole fish - sardines, mackerel, sea bass and sea bream - regularly, but they are all difficult to find locally at a sensible price, if at all.

White fish fillets will both break up and dry out, but if you wrap them in streaky bacon (or, more ostentatiously, in Serrano ham) it can help.

Another option might be prawn kebabs?

Placestogo · 26/06/2026 10:50

Thanks all for your suggestions.
unfortunately my local fishmonger did not have any sardines today…
i bought some mackerel, some king prawns and a large piece of salmon (i know i said i didnt want any!)
mackerel is currently marinating in chermoula, lemon garlic butter for prawns is ready. Salmon i am going to try the jamie oliver recipe https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fish/crispy-barbecued-salmon/
i may post pictures for update.
i really want sardines now though 😂

edited to add: i also bought some samphire to go with the fish

Lidl have frozen English sardines at the moment.

BIWI · 26/06/2026 11:14

I had no idea that my husband was doing his eating all wrong. Given that he would always choose fish and salads over other dishes.

Perhaps he's secretly gay?

FFS.
