Quantities for a barbecue

We always seem to over-cater, so I want to check how much other people do.

We have 9 adults at 5 children (ages 12, 12, 10, 6 and 4) including us. We'll be doing beef burgers, sausages and a side of roast beef that will be sliced up. Plus 2 simple salads and the usual buns, toppings etc.

How many burgers and sausages should we do? You'd think it would be simple but we (DH) always seem to buy too much.

One each of both and a few spare. So 18 burgers 18 sausages

MamaNell · 05/06/2026 17:21

The younger ones will eat a little less probably the adults may have more

bigsoftcocks · 05/06/2026 17:32

More than you think. Reckon 19 suggested is good shout

also add something more than just simple salad assuming you mean a lettuce/ leaves based thing. I would add potato salad and coleslaw too.

Possibly some French stick cut into slices

Iwanttobeafraser · 05/06/2026 17:32

If you're doing a large roast alongside, then I think you need a lot less of the burgers/sausages. But I'd still cater something like, 14 burger patties and at least 14 sausages.

if the roast alongside is quite small, I'd up the quantities.

Usually you need fewer buns. DD and me for example might each have a burger, but if we have a sausage or two as well, we'd have it without the bun.

hellospring26 · 05/06/2026 17:34

I don’t do sausages / burgers but do joints of meat eh lamb shoulder or beef, or both. It’s a lot simpler than the sausage and burger route.

MinnieMountain · 05/06/2026 18:24

We're having coleslaw and another salad (DH is deciding what). I'm not including lettuce, sliced tomatoes and gherkins in that.

18 of each sounds sensible. 30 buns in total?

DH always likes to add a random piece of meat. I'm not worried about leftovers of that.

I mean if we cook too much we just eat it for the next couple of days - we don’t have much waste at all; if I cooked joints of meat (which we don’t for bbqs I tend to do chicken, burgers, sausages maybe pork chops) I’d make it into another meal like a pie/ curry or have Cold meat and chips and coleslaw and pickles or something.
left over sausage and burger I chop up and make sausage/burger pasta bake with a tomatoe based sauce and cheese on the top - easy tea to go in the freezer

dontmalbeconme · 05/06/2026 19:07

I'd do 2 sausages and one burger per person, plus some spares. So 18 burgers & burger buns and maybe 30 sausages & hot dog rolls. But, I'd keep an eye on how many burgers & sausages were being eaten, and freeze, uncooked, any excess if it looked like they weren't needed.

I can never work it out just from numbers. Df and Fil will have a portion of everything and go back for seconds. Gm will pick like a bird. One of the 12 year olds has hit the hollow bones stage, another might eat half a burger, and another might only take a bite out of everything and eat three portions of dessert.

The fact that you have two beef options might mean people will choose between a slice of beef, and a burger rather than both. I’d have done chicken as the third option.

Groaaan · 05/06/2026 21:10

Roast beef at a bbq. No. Confusing.

18 burgers
18 sausages
18 koftas
Salad
bread

job done ✔️

MinnieMountain · 05/06/2026 21:25

I didn't ask for opinions on the menu @Groaaan. DH hasn't been able to barbecue yet this year and he's looking forward to adding a random thing.

What are the timing? Some bbqs run on for ages and therefore need more food. To be honest I’d get 25 sausages and 20 burgers but not cook all straight away, any unused go in the freezer.

bellventrico · 06/06/2026 15:08

1 burger and 2 sausages each plus 3 spare burgers and 4 sausages.

Invite for 12pm. A few will arrive at 1pm due to DC's sport. It's a Sunday so will probably run until 4-5pm.

20 burgers, 32 sausages
some form of potatoes - wedges, jackets, potato salad…

I know you (& DH) didn’t ask for comments on menu, but by suggesting beef and beef - you are going to get some queries! Unless you know all your family love it

I would skip the roast beef and do chicken thighs

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 06/06/2026 15:55

I would cater the 10-12 year olds as adults, my nephews eat far more than I do.
20 burgers and sausages and cook to order, freeze what isn’t used. 15 of each bun?

Roast beef bbqs are fine. Or at least you’ll get your head bit off if you say otherwise 😂

1 burger plus 2 sausages per person plus a few extra so 40 sausages and 20 burgers. 20 burger buns plus 40 finger rolls. If you have a few sausages over they can be eaten the next day. A few men might want 2 burgers and 2 sausages each. Depends if you have a few greedy guests or not. Sliced beef if not eaten on the day can be put in sandwiches the following day so should not get wasted. I find salad is often over catered.
