Train cake

My DS would really like a stand up train cake for his party. My DH is willing to make it but we are at a loss where to start.

Any links to websites you are aware of or quick ways of making a train cake would be appreciated. We were thinking chocolate log and mini rolls placed in a trainy way of some description.

Any advise gratefully received

I'm sure Lakeland have train moulds, standy upy

They do, but I was stunned at the price. Why not just improvise, do a squarish one for the front and then use log cakes as two carriages.

They made one once on Big Cook Little Cook here you go under sweet recipes, choo choo train

Any particular sort of train? A long one with carriages (like the lakeland mould but without the cost) gives you an individual cake per child.

If he wants Thomas the Tank Engine or similar I have seen a few sites online where it details how you make a large engine-shaped cake.

Have you tried googling for pictures for inspiration?

Thanks all. I'll have a look.

For a steam engine with trucks make a large rectangular cake and cut into 3-4 smaller rectangles. Take 1 and cut in half lengthways and make an L shape. Put a swiss roll on the horizontal bit of the L. The vertical bit might need to be cut in half and doubled up. Make truck out of the other pieces of cake. Cover with butter icing and use sweets for wheels, coupling cargo etc.

Use gel or powder food colouring if you want thomas blue.
