If you had to buy only 5 items of organic produce, what would they be?

What are the most worthwhile things to buy 'organic'?

Currently exclusively breastfeeding, planning what to buy nearly-6 month old for BLW weaning and I don't know whether it's worth it to buy organic for him, considering I don't eat any organic food at the moment, so he will have got lots of non-organic nastiness through my milk anyway. Should I bother or just save my pennies for something more interesting?

Potatoes
Carrots
Butter
Milk

These are the only things I buy organic versions of... the potatoes+carrots just taste better, and the organic milk is supposed to be higher in omega 3 or summat.

The best thing to do is try to buy local as the stuff is far fresher than anything in a shop and therefore more nutritious. Don't sweat it tho - enjoy it!

meat
carrots

oh I don't know

Not fish that's for sure.

Organic food can still contain pestisides, only approved ones.

Enid · 23/06/2008 13:11

i only buy organic carrots when in the supermarket tbh, every thign else is the cheapy version

I used to buy more organic but resent the huge price increases from the supermarkets

I buy most of mien from the farm shop where they are not organic as far as I know

Milk. I very rarely buy non organic milk. (although I do get non-organic butter and cheese.. )

I read a list once of the things it was worth buying organic and the only one I remember is milk A lot of the others actually had very little difference between organic/non-organic. Bananas was another one I think - they're sprayed a phenomenal amount of times during their growing season IIRC.

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 13:12

in 2000, the store Iceland went all organic and this coincided with weaning DD. Plus she was my pfb. Consequently she has had a lot more organic produce than DS who will be weaned in a few weeks. I just cannot afford to buy organic on my mat pay. 3 organic apples or 10 non-organic? No contest, in my book. I need to give my family fresh fruit and veg daily and to do that I cannot go organic. I do not have the resources to buy much organic produce and I'm not going to worry to much either.

MrsMattie · 23/06/2008 13:13

Once you get used to organic milk, 'normal' milk smells horrible - sort of fishy.

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 13:13

I always buy organic milk though, always.

MamaFormerlyKnownAsGlam · 23/06/2008 13:14

x post Mrs Mattie, not brown nosing!

carrots. i have heard bad things re what they are sprayed with and gvt advice is too peel them thickly.

eggs sometimes as they are nicer.

bran · 23/06/2008 13:17

I always buy organic milk, meat, chicken and eggs. If I'm faced with choice between organic or free range chicken and eggs then I will usually go for free range, but I prefer if they are both free range and organic.

I've just checked the milk that I use, and it's not organic because I only have goats' milk, but ds has organic cows' milk.

I buy organic fruit and veg that is watery quite often (tomatoes, cucumber etc) because they suck up a lot of fluid that could be pesticide laden. I worry less about fruit and veg that I will be washing and peeling.

Gobbledigook · 23/06/2008 13:17

I buy nearly everything organic but if I had to choose:

Milk
Kids' fruit - apples, grapes, bananas
Carrots

Meat from butchers only (not sure if organic tbh but it's 100% better than supermarket shit)

Must admit - I've gone back to non-organic cucumber as the price difference is huge - I think it was 97p for an organic one in Tesco and under 50p for a non-organic one.

LullyOfShallot · 23/06/2008 13:20

root vegetables
soft fruit
cucumber/salad stuff
apples
milk

OverMyDeadBody · 23/06/2008 13:20

there is no conclusive research that organic is actually better for us.

Also, it's alright for us here in the west, but organic isn't actually sustainable as a method for producing enough food to feed the world. We just wouldn't be able to do it, the world isn't big enough.
