World Cup recipe ideas

So… every time there’s a World Cup we get together with family and friends to watch the England matches and one of us has to bring along food/snacks from the country that are playing England that day. It’s my turn for the first match against Croatia but even after extensive Googling can’t find anything that’s from Croatia that we might want to eat…any ideas?

They have lots of meat and cheese platters. The ham is typically Istrian ham which I doubt you’ll be able to find here, but you could just serve any good quality ham alongside any hard sheep or goats cheese.
for pudding they have round fried dough balls similar to ‘doughnut holes’ that you can get in this country. You may be able to get hold of some and serve with lemon curd for dipping.

I'd check the Eastern European section of the supermarket if there is one. Look for the little sausages ćevapi? Or you could look up some recipes for Burek using frozen filo pastry?

Another vote for the nearest Polish shop.

Ham, sausage, salami with olives and tomatoes on the side.

It depends where in Croatia. We're not long home from the Istrian Peninsula, which is the Adriatic coast that runs down from Trieste in Italy through Slovenia to Croatia. That area has changed hands many times over the centuries - Pula in Croatia has a huge Roman amphitheatre so it was part of the Roman Empire. It was the main port for the navy of the Austro-Hungarian empire so strong influences from there, then after the First World War it was part of Italy under Mussolini. Croatia has two official languages - Croatian and Italian. That's a very long winded way of saying there are such strong Italian influences, there's a lot of pizza and pasta there. So in your situation, I'd serve pizza!!!
