Can someone answer me a quick question about lentils

I am planning to make Lentil soup. The recipe calls for red lentils. I have Puy Lentils in my cupboard. Can I use them, or will this make my soup taste wierd?
(It is Lentil Soup with tomatoes, cumin and coriander.)

red lentils go pretty mushy when they are cooked, whereas I think Puy lentils are likely to remain firm. So will make a difference to the texture more than the taste I think.

The soup will be different but still OK. Puy lentils tend to keep their shape more than red ones, so you may want to blend the soup.

It might make the soup a different colour.
Red lentils go a nice yellowy colour once cooked.

puy lentils will be more floury too, as well as taking longer to cook, but will still make a nice soup. They definately have a different taste to red lentils.

Puy lentils retain their shape when cooked as, afaik, they still have the skin on them. Red lentils have the skin polished off(as well as being a different variety) so they break down and thicken the soup. The puy lentils won't thicken the soup in the same way unless you blend them and then it will go a sludgy colour but it will still taste nice.

Excellent. I shall try it with Puy lentils.
Thankyou all.
