Would you cook a frozen pork joint past its eat-by date?

I have a pork joint in the freezer, with an eat by date of 24th april. I'm tempted to eat it, but do mn'ers think it's too risky?

PS
Occasionally meat (and other products) are labeled with something like "Previously frozen, do not refreeze".
As long as your pork doesn't say that, you're fine. Although I've ignored even that once or twice in the past and suffered no ill effects.
If it does have that label and you don't want to eat it, you can at least learn the lesson that you could have cooked it, then it would have OK to refreeze it.
Probably quite handy having some slices of cooked meat in the freezer.

Unless you bought it frozen, the use by date is for when it is fresh. Once in the freezer… you have months…. Maybe years (ha ha)!!

It shouldn’t be dangerous unless it wasn’t stored properly before it went in. The quality might have declined a bit though.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
And, to all the snarky posters, knock yourself out. If replying l8ke that to serious questions makes you happier, you must have a pretty sad life.

Ummm it wasn't a serious question though!

Totally fine. We farm pigs. I have pork in the deep freeze that has a fresh use by date from nearly 2 years ago. It was properly processed and frozen right away and is perfectly safe.

Ah come on OP, it was a pretty silly question 😉

To you maybe.

Okay, so what do you think the purpose of a freezer is if not to preserve food beyond its' best before date? Confused

catipuss · 14/05/2026 14:42

It might have been on MN that someone said they had thrown away a load of frozen meat and were very angry with the supplier, because it had short use by dates. But those dates were relevant to when it was packed before it was frozen, I don't think they were ever convinced it was OK.

midlifeattheoasis · 14/05/2026 15:21

@Sausagenbacon

Do you mean April 2025 or earlier , because otherwise I can’t quite understand why you’re asking the question ?

LaburnumAnagyroides · 14/05/2026 15:25

I have just found some salmon fillets in my freezer dated Sept 2021. They are going in fishcakes tonight. They may not be the best flavour by now, but by the time they are covered in wasabi and chilli, they'll be delicious.

sesquipedalian · 14/05/2026 15:27

OP, if you kept it in your freezer for a year from today, it might be a bit freezer burned and would definitely have lost some if its taste, but it wouldn’t kill you so long as you defrosted and cooked it properly!

Babyboomtastic · 14/05/2026 15:27

What did you think the point of a freezer was OP? If you are going to be eating it by it's date, why would you have put it in the freezer?

Why are you being so rude to people that are then honestly baffled by your question?

simpsonthecat · 14/05/2026 15:29

And the turkey we all ate that was at least 15 months old 🦃

If you don't understand this, I have no idea why you didn't put it in the fridge and not the freezer. What about a fresh not frozen pizza you buy and freeze that day, or sausages from the butcher? My butcher does a range of the most delicious sausages imaginable, I have no idea on eat by dates or any malarkey like that. I freeze them and take out what I want when I want.
