Any Welsh MNers about? I need cake help!

My amdram society is doing a production of Under Milkwood for a local festival, I've been asked to do cakes for front of House. Apart from Barabrith and Welsh Cakes (which I'm not sure will taste too nice served cold...) I haven't been able to find anything 'traditionally' Welsh.

Would any of you lovely MNers have any ideas or recipes for authentic Welsh cake? Or should I just do cupcakes with daffodils and leeks on them?(joke! )

Don't know of any proper Welsh recipes, but Welsh cakes are just as lovely cold, as well as warm

In fact, I don't think I've ever actually tasted a warm Welsh cake...

I have a wonderful book I have inherited called a taste of Wales though I do struggle with it as some is in welsh (understandably)

theres a recipe for Teisen Lap in it which translate to plate cake. I'll type it up if you want it. It looks a fairly simple recipe

ohh Bara Sinsir- Welsh gingerbread (no ginger in it!)

I grew up in Wales but can't think of any cakes other than the ones mentioned.

I have a book of Welsh cake recipes, DH is from Swansea.

There is a good recipe for Welsh Cakes in it. Also there is Cinnamon Cake (apparently one of the most traditional Welsh cakes), Old Welsh Gingerbread (traditionally sold at Welsh country fairs), Honey and Ginger cake.

Let me know if you fancy any of these recipes and I'll type them up for you.

LOL at Laverbread! The first time my DH's family served it up to me I nearly gagged! I love the stuff now, and so does DS1 (aged 2.10)

Anyhoo to the recipes!

Cinnamon cake (Teisen Sinamon)
80z SR flour
1tsp ground cinnamon
pinch salt
4oz butter
4oz caster sugar
3 eggs, separated
a little milk to moisten
1tbsp golden caster sugar
Raspberry or stawberry jam

Set oven to 350F/ Mark 4. Grease shallow 8" tin. Seive together in a bowl flour, cinnamon and salt. Rub in the butter. Add caster sugar and beaten egg yolks to flour mixture and mix to a stiff consistency. Add milk to moisten lightly. Bake in greased tin for 25 mins. Turn out and cool on wire rack. Reduce oven to 325F/ Mark 3. For topping, whip egg whites until stiff then fold in golden caster sugar. Spread jam over the top of cooled cake and pile on meringue mixture. Return to oven and cook for approx 20 mins until meringue is set and pale golden brown.

Old Welsh Gingerbread

12oz flour
1tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp bicarb
4oz butter
6oz demerara sugar
2oz chopped candies peel
6floz black teacle
1/4 pint milk

Set oven to 350F/ Mark 3. Sift together into a bowl flour, cream of tartar and bicarb, rub in the butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar and peel. Warm treacle in a pan, add milk and combine well then stir into the dry ingredients. Beat well together, turn into a greased and base lined 7 x 11" tin and bake for 1 1/2 hours, covering the top with foil if it appears to brown too quickly. Cool in the tin for 10 mins then turn out onto a wire rack. Serve cut into squares.

THW, ta for that, I have a cast iron hotplate on my cooker so will attempt the Welshcakes on that - perhaps I'll make a trial batch beforehand...
