Communion cake help!!

So I have decided to bake a communion cake for my child tomorrow, been years since I've done occasion cakes.

Doing 3 layers of an 8inch sponge with filling in between.

Just realised I've no cake dowels left; would kebab sticks be a good substitute? Feeling a bit like I've bitten off more than I can chew at the minute 🙈

Assuming it's not a 2 tier and the dowels you want were only to stop layers slipping then kebab sticks would be fine. Personally I put no supports in a single tier 3 layer 8"

Do you mean separate tiers with a gap between each layer, or the 3 layers on top of each other? I've never used dowels if its the latter.

For safety, I'd never put kebab sticks inside a cake. I used to work in A&E and someone had their face pushed into the cake- the resulting eye injury was not good.

You don’t need anything in a single tier cake.

Ice and decorate and stick in the fridge to firm up

So it's 3, 6 inch cakes stacked with filling in between the layers. Intention is for something like the attached photo

Yeah this is what I originally thought, crumb coat and chill then ice with buttercream but I met a friend who bakes at the shops and she asked if I had dowels to support it. I haven't made one as tall as this before so was a bit worried it wouldn't hold.

That's just a single tier cake, it doesn't need any supports, just chill after filling so buttercream sets, then do the outside buttercream to ensure it stays straight. Shouldn't have any problems, if you really really wanted something for security put a straw in the middle, just one, will pin all layers together if you are unsure but it should not be necessary.

No need for dowels In a cake like this, even 4 layers wouldn’t need them
