Biscuits for babies

Does anyone have any good recipe ideas for biscuits for my 9month old daughter. Even the low sugar rusks seem quite unhealthy, and she wasn't a fan of AK's marmite rusk jobs. Nice and hard for chewing on would be ideal...
Many thanks!

Not much help for you sorry, but can you still buy Biccie Pegs, rock hard biscuits with a whole in one end like a needle, so you could threadle a ribbon, when the little darling dropped it it just stuck to their cardigans.

the oatcakes on the BLW blog are meant to be good [rummages]
here

the 1970s babyfood book my mum saved for me suggests drying out crusts or thick slices of bread in a low oven to make rusks - guess these would come out similar to breadsticks.

Garibaldi's always go down well with lo's.

MrsBadger · 20/06/2008 12:17

I did consider suggesting Malted Milks (DD's favourite) but wasn't sure that was quite what the OP wanted...

wagon wheels.

MrsBadger · 20/06/2008 12:18

don't be silly

wagon wheels are for mummies

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 20/06/2008 12:33

you forgot to put the jammy before wagon wheels

OverMyDeadBody · 20/06/2008 13:05

pink wafers?

OverMyDeadBody · 20/06/2008 13:07

how about the organix gingerbread men or animal biscuits? Mind you, they do go soggy quickly.

Toast or oatcakes. You can't go wrong with those.

jelliebelly · 20/06/2008 13:18

ds always loved breadsticks - organix do some biscuits with no added sugar which are nice too

cmotdibbler · 20/06/2008 13:21

If you think about them as biscuits and not a regular foodstuff, then it makes sense to just give them a biscuit. If you want them to have a meal, give them toast. Sorted.

DS likes custard creams - he thinks he's in heaven when we visit my mum and dad as hes discovered that they have tea and biccies in bed every morning, so you can bounce on the big bed and eat custard creams.

HensMum · 20/06/2008 13:29

The Organix no added sugar rusks are yummy. I always hope that DS won't finish it so I can pick off the soggy bits and eat it. They are quite soft - kind of a stale biscuit texture but pretty healthyas

Also, I've got a book by Carol Timperley called Baby and Child Vegetarian Recipes which has a recipe for oat cookies, which is under the "9-12 month" section. They contain flour, oats, butter, apple and pear spread (guess any kind of fruit concentrate would do) and an egg. I won't reproduce the recipe here as that would rip off the copyright but you could see if your library has the book.

There's a great recipe for Cheese Stars in Nigella's book.
Very yummy, no sugar, no salt no eggs but lots of cheese.

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 20/06/2008 21:35

have I missed something obvious about why nobody's saying "digestives"? ds quite fond of those. In fact if anyone knows a good digestive-like recipe, I'd like to hear it!

Seona1973 · 21/06/2008 11:13

a digestive or a rich tea biscuit goes down well with ds

GinGirl · 21/06/2008 20:43

Thank you for all the ideas ladies,

Mrs Badger I will go and have a look at that link. Will also check out those Cheese Stars as (like her mother) my daughter will eat anything containing cheese!

I was really looking for some biscuits I could make myself as have found a duck shaped cookies cutter and ducks are my DD's fave thing

xx

You could try a basic biscuit recipe and mash some banana or grate some apple into the mix. Fine to reduce the sugar as your daughter won't expect them to be really sweet.

My daughter really liked the Organix soft brown rusks at this age. They are not too sweet and quite tasty (I quite liked them too).

Washersaurus · 23/06/2008 22:49

I've often made Nigella's cheese ones with all sorts of cutters - everyone loves them! Other than that I only offer rice or oat cakes. Does a 9mo really need biscuits?

Washersaurus · 23/06/2008 22:56

I didn't mean for that to sound so bad, sorry. What I actually meant was - I wouldn't share MY biscuits with my baby (or indeed my DH )
