Inexpensive homemade party food ideas to take along on Saturday

EvangelinaMae · 23/04/2026 13:27

I've just been invited to a party on Saturday, I want to take something with me, any ideas of what to take? Needs to be inexpensive. I'm thinking of some kind of vol au vent, pastry roll type things so I can make a tray up to take.

Thanks

Buy a bag (or two) of mini potatoes and roast them with garlic, pepper and salt, then make a dip of a tub of Philadelphia mixed with a packet of onion soup powder. Sounds horrible but it’s bloody delicious!

A nice frittata!

Little toasts (the Italian ones from Tesco are perfect amount for this recipe) with a mackerel and dill topping (250g mackerel fillets, 3 tbsp creme fraiche, juice and zest of a lemon, 1/2 pack dill finely chopped, salt and black pepper) cost is around £5 and you’ll have leftover creme fraiche and dill topping use on another dish.

Spanish omelette
Tuna and white bean salad
avocado, cherry tomato and mozzarella topped with a basil leaf on a cocktail stick
Mafalleta - filled bread loaf
Thai noodle salad
Glazed cocktail sausages (decent sausages)
Home made sausage rolls
Cheese and pineapple always goes down well

Potato salad or pasta salad

Easy cheese straws.

Buy puff pastry. A sheet or roll out a block. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut into finger width strips about 20cm long.

Sprinkle with grated cheese, salt, pepper and baked at 170 until golden. Easy and delicious.

You can make mini bacon cheese turnovers buy cutting puff pastry into squares. Mix cream cheese with a little mustard. Smear some cream cheese diagonally across the squares, lay bacon on top of the cream cheese then a generous layer of grated cheddar. Fold the non cheesy corners together over the bacon and join with a dab of water to stick. Bake at about 170 until the pastry is cooked and cheese is browning.

Pull apart garlic bread.

Google a recipie, or:
Make bread dough & proove twice
Divide into walnut sized balls
Melt a load (1/3 pack?) of butter, add in garlic powder, onion powder, (chopped parsley if you want).
Coat the dough balls in the butter mixture, and top into a spring based cake tin if you have, otherwise a tin of some sort. Cook 180 for 40-50 mins.
Allow to cool for a bit before serving, but best eaten the day you bake.

I've posted these recipes so many times. All can be made a day ahead or at least the vast majority a day ahead and assemble on the day.

-You can add almost any filling you have. Tomatoes, semi dried tomato, ham, salami, bacon, basil, spring onions, red onions, various cheese, tuna/sweet corn etc. https://www.amummytoo.co.uk/filo-pastry-mini-quiches-great-for-kids-to-make-and-eat/
-You can buy cracker toasts or cut the crust off bread, roll with rolling pin and bake till just crisp. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/mackerel-pate
-I prefer curried eggs and replace the mustard powder with curry powder. I boiled the eggs and make up the mix the day before. Keep in th fridge and just pipe/decorate on the day https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/devilled_eggs_96275
-I use puff pastry for these and the cheap aldi/lidl brie. Don't use anything expensive like Brie de meaux because it melts and runs everywhere, whereas the cheper stuff stays in shape. I've used walnuts instead of pecans too. https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/a56610/cranberry-brie-bites-recipe/
-Fruit skewers. I wouldn't even bother making the chocolate sauce because people might double dip but a refreshing, light dessert can be a good palate cleanser. Many supermarkets sell smaller, canape type skewers too. www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/kazimas_fruity_kebabs_62555

I love a potato salad which has oil and mayo because the shop bought ones are so creamy and disgusting they make me feel sick. Do a nice one though with shallots etc through it.

I'm going to do caprese tortilla pinwheels, thanks everyone 👍🏻
