they'll be fine in a cake, it's just as a cereal i am wedded to kelloggs only.

my mum used to make a great all-bran cake in the 80s, i think it had tea in it as the liquid and loads of dried fruit. does anyone have any ideas?

oh, i have googled btw. they all seem to be american recipes requiring shortening. wtf is shortening?

shortening - kind of veg suet, I think. Branflake cakes?

mrsbabookaloo · 18/06/2008 22:45

I think its like lard, or...atora?? what is that stuff? I think you can ignore and use butter.

Please can you translate the thread title: I can't quite make it out!

ThursdayNext · 18/06/2008 22:46

Shortening is Trex type stuff
Could you eat them as cereal if you added extra sultanas? Or feed them to your children who know no better?

Is bowfing a scottish word for minging?

Habbibu · 18/06/2008 22:50

Minging IS a Scottish word!! It's only been adopted by the English relatively recently.

Cheesecake base?

This from MoneySavingExpert:
Meringue Crunchies
(makes 30 - 36)

2 egg whites
5oz/150g caster sugar
6oz/175g crunch (cereal, broken biscuit, muesli, nuts whatever you have)

Beat the egg whites with the sugar for 3 mins with an electric whisk until really thick. (It will take longer if done by hand) Fold in the crunchy bits. Line 3 baking sheets with foil and dot with teaspoons of the mixture, leaving room for them to spread. Place the baking sheets in the oven before you turn it out. Shut the door and turn off the heat and leave the cookies for at least 8 hours (overnight is perfect) Don't open the door until morning! Result very yummy cookies!

you can tell, mrsbabookaloo. she can tell, we can All Tell that it's not kelloggs. the flakes are lighter and sog up withing five secs of meeting the milk. minging will do as a rough translation, but bowfing has overtones of nausea that i think minging lacks.

hmm. a distinct possibility habs. although what i'm hoping is that i can hand on long enough for someone to find the mad teacake recipe. lol, i think mum was on the f plan at the time. wasn't everyone?

mrsbabookaloo · 18/06/2008 22:54

Oh yes, don't worry Aitch. I can ALWAYS tell. That's why I can't join in with all these mners who have resolved to cut their grocery bills in half by shopping at Aldi. I applaud it, my finances are crying out for it, BUT I CAN'T do it.

Thanks for new word.

mrsbabookaloo · 18/06/2008 22:55

Frankly, those meringue things sound bowfing.

Melt some chocolate and make choc crispy cakes.

Habbibu · 18/06/2008 22:56

Um - this was on the Delia online forum: This is a fat free cake (loaf) using All Bran which makes a nice moist loaf. It is one I used to do Donkey's years ago, and is well tried and trusted.
All Bran Loaf (The cup is a tea cup)
1 Cup All Bran
1 Cup sugar
1 Cup Mixed dried fruit
1 Cup milk (I suppose you could use tea here)
1 Cup Self-Raising flour
pinch salt.
Method
Mix All Bran, sugar, fruit and milk or tea in a bowl. Leave to stand 45 mins. Stir in sifted flour and salt. Pour into lined loaf tin and bake about an hour gas 5, maybe more time till cooked and brown.

really? with bran flakes? that sounds healthy... i wonder..?

ming actually means to smell, doesn't it habs? what do you english people think it means?

mrsbabookaloo · 18/06/2008 22:59

Yes, I would say that that is the literal meaning, but it has now come to mean generally disgusting in any way, particularly referring to the ugliness of someone of the opposite sex.

AitchNunsnet · 18/06/2008 22:59

i think that's the one, habs! it'd be better with tea, wouldn't it? i love tea and sultanas etc. do you think i could subs sultana bran?

OP posts:
AitchNunsnet · 18/06/2008 23:01

well why are you slobbering all over my native tongue then habs? geroff!

OP posts:
Habbibu · 18/06/2008 23:03

Huh! Just checked OED - ming apparently meant "human excrement", hence the "unpleasant smell" meaning of minging. It's funny - I'd never heard it until I moved to Glasgow in 91, started using it (to askance looks) at home, and it seems it took off in England about 10 years later. And then "chav" got exported to Scotland.
Don't see why you couldn't use sultana bran. Do wonder if the proportions of liquid/dry would be the same with bran flakes as with all bran - maybe less for the flakes? You need Carmenere.

Habbibu · 18/06/2008 23:05

Oh, it's the zeal of the converted/white settler. Besides, I have officially increased the dwindling Scottish demographic (by one, but not for want of trying!). And boy, is she Scottish!

we really do need to meet up, i feel. perhaps i'll persuade dh to take another hol in his homeland.

you didn't go to glasgow uni did you? (mind you i htink i'd left by 91, or as near as dammit)

OP posts:
AitchNunsnet · 18/06/2008 23:09

fruit and fibre is loathsome imo i'm afraid. dried banana gives me the heaves... it's tanabran or nothing for me. is the asda stuff good, you promise? i've tried all the other own makes... not great. but somerfield's is inedible.

Habbibu · 18/06/2008 23:09

I did go to Glasgow - 1991-2000. Yes, come and play on the beach and take the piss out of my bastard mongrel accent. That said, we really should make one of our pilgrimage visits to alma mater land soon (DH also Glasgow grad) - shall we have a race?
