Does anyone else add baked beans to cottage pie mince?

I've always made cottage pie by adding a tin of baked beans into the beef mince mix. I was looking through recipes recently and none mentioned baked beans, so I now feel like some sort of heathen. What do you include? 😬

In theory it should be fine, essentially white beans and tomatoes, but baked bean manufacturers add so much sugar, they would ruin the taste.

No. I occasionally bulk it out with lentils (or make it with just lentils) but wouldn’t use baked beans.

My mother used to serve baked beans on the side, and I don’t even like that!

BlessicaBlimpson · 27/03/2026 19:22

Yes, we call it cowboy pie

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 27/03/2026 19:24

Yes into shepherds pie. V tasty. Adds a little something.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 27/03/2026 19:31

No but I use probably twice as much soffrito as suggested.

TheEasterBunny3 · 27/03/2026 19:44

My mum did this as I was growing up & my DH loves it!

ladybranstonpickle · 27/03/2026 19:48

Yes! My mum always does!

moggerhanger · 27/03/2026 19:54

I adore baked beans. But not, under any circumstances, in a cottage pie. Or bolognaise. Just all wrong!

DustyMaiden · 27/03/2026 19:59

DM used to do that to make it go further.

Riapia · 27/03/2026 19:59

Can’t imagine not adding baked beans, the taste would be ruined.
Only the middle class have eaten it without baked beans.
🍴🍴😁😁.

I often put small tin in a beef stew.

pinkpony88 · 27/03/2026 20:23

Yes if I need it to stretch a bit further or I think we need a bit of extra fibre/less red meat.

Vanillazebra · 27/03/2026 20:24

Yes! My Grandma and my Mum did too!

FishPie2 · 27/03/2026 20:26

Always, I love baked beans. I like them with salad and mashed/jacket potatoes for lunch which my husband thought was a dreadful combination but not me. I can eat them with anything especially a nice steak.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 27/03/2026 20:29

My dad does. I don't.

I knew a woman once who would put a tin of vegetable soup in hers.

Soffrito - in a cottage pie?

horseplay12 · 27/03/2026 22:48

Yes, or a tin of lentils - extra protein, fibre and makes the meat go further

RedWineCupcakes · 27/03/2026 22:52

Hell no. Why would I ruin food of the gods by adding devil's spawn?

The first thing I would do as world ruler would be to abolish baked beans.

daffodilandtulip · 27/03/2026 22:55

No! BUT I make a cheap “cottage” pie with just beans, mash layer, and cheese on top. One of my favourite meals 🤣

hazelberry · 27/03/2026 22:55

I wouldn't add them or bulk it out with horrible lentils. I would eat baked beans with cottage pie though.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 27/03/2026 18:41

No but my mother always used to serve baked beans as a vegetable with shepherd’s pie.

Same here! But never in the pie itself.

Fingalscave · 27/03/2026 22:58

Yes I do, the tomato sauce makes the gravy richer. I also add tomato puree as well as carrots and onion.

We have the reduced sugar baked beans!

I've done this occasionally when the DC still lived at home, especially when they were ravenous teenagers; they loved it. It's actually quite good.

cannynotsay · 27/03/2026 23:01

It’s a poor person thing, in bolognese too. anything with beef mince to bulk it out = beans
