Feeding a man is different to eating alone

busybeewantstosavetime · 25/03/2026 14:05

Eating alone my cooking is quick and easy most of the time. My partner likes to eat meat with every meal but I don’t! I would often be happy with an easy pasta dish and veg.

What are your quick mid week meals that involve some sort of meat?

my easy ones are:
Spaghetti bolognaise
enchiladas/ fajitas
meatball pasta bake

i like things like paella and risotto but cook them without meat so I’m thinking maybe cook some chicken on the side.

Any other ideas?

Why do you have to cook what he wants? Does he pay the bills and you're a housewife? If not, each person can eat what they want, surely?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/03/2026 14:14

We fend for ourselves. If he wants chicken with his risotto, can't be just cook a chicken on the weekend, break it up and have some when he feels like it?

HellonHeels · 25/03/2026 14:15

I don't cook meat or fish. Can't stand the idea that a meal has to have meat or it's not a proper meal, so I wouldn't engage with that.

Traybakes may be your friend here. Then you can add meat for him if he wants it but the majority can be veggies etc. So roast meat and veggies/potatoes, risotto with rice or orzo, pasta bakes with chicken chunks, lasagne, big puff pastry sheet with slices of ham and cheese + bag of salad.

Thin-cut frying steaks - fry them whole with sliced onions, and have spud and veg on the side; or cut them up in strips and stir-fry with green peppers, mushroom, sugar-snaps and readymade black bean or teriyaki sauce and rice on the side. It's a bit more faff than I would do just for me but worth it for two.

Firefly100 · 25/03/2026 14:25

Sounds like someone needs to start doing more cooking for himself

StationJack · 25/03/2026 14:25

Any other ideas? He can cook his own meals.

Bjorkdidit · 25/03/2026 14:25

If he wants meat or something more time consuming than what you feel like cooking, he cooks it himself.

Can I ask how you make them tender? I find I always make them too chewy. Do you literally cook for seconds? X

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 25/03/2026 14:27

And yes, he should share the cooking and learn to cook and eat some vegetarian meals as well. I'm all for mixing it up.

I literally cook for seconds - today's leftovers are tomorrow's meal.

pinkdelight · 25/03/2026 14:30

Does he need you to feed him? Can't he cook for both of you or you take turns? I get that it's nice to eat together but the way you've phrased it 'feeding a man' and the meat thing makes him sound like some big dog you're looking after rather than a capable adult. Presumably he cooks these meaty meals for himself all the time when he eats alone so he can tell you all his fave recipes and indeed cook them for you so you know exactly how he likes 'em!

MidnightMeltdown · 25/03/2026 14:32

Cook what you want to eat. Your DH can either eat it, or cook his own

Malariahilaria · 25/03/2026 14:33

Have I stumbled onto a woman's own article from 1972? He can cook his own food. Unless you are in fact a stay at home wife wearing a pretty apron in which case might i suggest a Delia cook book?

TomatoSandwiches · 25/03/2026 14:33

He can buy his own meat and prep it to add to the meals you cook if he's not happy.

Ah ha. Yeah I'll try that. I presume dry fry or a tiny bit of oil then add the sauce after?
Like sirloin but just much quicker! Thank you very much x

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/03/2026 14:34

Why can’t he cook?

Yes, very quick cooking for the steaks, I start the onions first.

MiddleAgedDread · 25/03/2026 14:38

Does he consider fish to be an acceptable alternative to meat??
stir fry
chicken & mushroom risotto
curry (batch cook a meat and veggie one at weekend and freeze)
sausage, mash & veg then you could have veggie ones
roasted veg tray bakes
pie & veg - he has a meaty one, you have a veggie one
steak & chips
burgers - again, flexibility to veggies ones if you prefer
chilli

Im pleased i live alone i hate cooking.
Like you op if i do cook its something quick and easy.

RoughGuide · 25/03/2026 14:43

Does the main in question have no arms or something?

Lifestooshort71 · 25/03/2026 14:44

Wow, so many snarky answers.

OP, a traybake of roasted veg how you like them and some shredded/sliced cold meat in the fridge that he can add to his? MOH adds thinly sliced cold beef in hot gravy to veggie sides - and no, he's never had food poisoning by doing this! Or batch cook some chipolata sausages, slice thinly and freeze - they go well in a lot of pasta/tomato dishes.

Yours being the snarkiest.

PepsiBook · 25/03/2026 14:53

Are you taking it in turns to cook?
Hopefully it's not all on you, unless you're not working?
