Family meals ideas

MumTeapot5 · 16/03/2026 20:03

As the title suggest please share some family meals that are quick and not too much fuss for a family of 6.
I seem to be cooking the same meals week in week out and although nobody ever complains, I’m getting bored so I imagine the kids and hubby will be too 🙈
I work full time as does DH and I’m the first one home at 4pm so I start teas and it’s quite predictable of spag bol Monday, fajitas on Tuesday, Wednesday chicken chasseur, Thursday cottage pie, pizzas on Friday, Saturday is normally a take away or eating out if we are out for the day and Sunday a roast either chicken or beef.
Apart from sausages none of us like pork so any ideas without pork would be appreciated.
TIA x

I do set meals each week but will change around what they are. So in effect have 3 weeks of meals.
So monday is rice but we alternate between savoury rice with left over meat, nandos rice with pan fried spicy chicken or Jambalaya.
Tuesday is pasta so bolognaise, chorizo and red pepper or sausage pasta on rotation.
Wednesday is a curry.
Thursday mash and veg night with chicken, meat pie, or fish.
Friday is bean night rice and bean burrito, chilli and rice or jacket potato and beans.
Saturday is anything goes depending what everyone's doing usually pizza, fajitas, homemade fish and chips or an all day breakfast.
Sunday is roast pork, chicken or gammon.

We have ‘breakfast for dinner’ quite often. That can take various forms. For example, last week we had scrambled eggs, chipolatas and toast with melon slices. I do some variation of eggs, sausages/bacon/beans, toast or hash browns and fruit (melon slices or a fruit salad). Very easy to throw together.

These creamy beans (which I think are essentially the ‘marry me chickpeas’ everyone raves about). The panko with the lemony rocket really elevates it and is worth making even if it seems a faff.

I also often do a roast chicken (you could do thighs or whatever if you didn’t want to do a whole chicken), plus baguettes with butter and some sort of spring veg, often asparagus or buttered leeks and greens. It’s easy to throw together and just takes time to cook the chicken. We can get two dinners out of it, or one of the above, plus I’ll make chicken soup which will last us 2 more nights.

Lots of ideas on the thread already. The only extra ones I can think of are

toad in the hole as you like sausages
pie, mash and veggies
massive sausage roll cut in slices
spanish omelette
quesadillas, I make some totally inauthentic ones with tinned tuna and grated cheese, and salad / veg sticks
egg fried rice, can put almost any meat / prawns on top if you want
sweet and sour chicken with rice

Cous cous mixed with veg and meat of choice
veg or meat stir fry noodles or rice
tuna pasta with added tomatoes and kidney beans
home made pizza - let the kids pick their toppings and create their master piece
sausage and veg tray bake - add peppers, onion, mushroom and corn on the cob, drizzle with bbq sauce
mini crustless quiches made in a muffin tin - great for lunch boxes too
dauphinois potatoes with added cheese with meat of choice
deconstructed cottage pie
mini yorkshires with mash gravy and sausage
fish pie

For a while when the DC were younger we tried to have a rough plan of one night of each of these:

Vegetarian
Curry
Fish
Fajita/Taco
Burger
Roast

So sometimes things would overlap like a vegetarian curry or a fish taco.

All of mine seem to like Cornish Pasty Pie but it does have a fair bit of chopping so you might want to prep at the weekend or get some help.

Cornish-Style Pie - Pinch Of Nom

Our take on a classic Cornish pasty is a filling dinner that's a little lighter on the waistline than the traditional pastry.

That does seem quite restrictive. Do you vary the fajitas/pizza so it's different? We do chicken or halloumi or steak. We also sometimes do chargrilled greens with halloumi in wraps instead of fajitas.

First thing I'd do is broaden your pasta sauce options - so pasta day can be a bit more varied. So we have a variety of pasta/gnocchi sauces on rotation currently. Tomato, chorizo, aubergine and chilli. Creamy sausage/fennel pasta. Spinach, ricotta, smoked salmon. We tried a stroganoff style sauce with mince the other day which went down quite well. Homemade pesto with greens and mozzarella.

Chicken tray bakes are a great way to do something slightly different. Search up a few recipes that work for you. Or slow bake chicken thighs and serve with potatoes and veg.

What about fish? Could you rotate in a fish meal every week or two? Fish cakes are easy (home made or store), salmon works well in the air fryer or a fried cod/pollock fillet. It does get expensive though!

We like steak but we seldom do a full steak meal - too expensive. So strogonoff or stir fry. or sometimes we do ciabattas, slaw, mushrooms and a steak goes a lot further that way.

Jacket potatoes? We do baked beans and cheese for ease. Or I make creamy butterbeans using any one of 10000 versions on instagram! Grin. Or stuffed with tuna and cream cheese. Or whatever filling you like. I like to serve with a salad to make it less heavy.
