Home baking with toddler

I’d like to try home baking with my toddler nephew. Any nice ideas to try?

He loves cake (or the idea of it!).

Puff pastry pinwheels (or snails!) and puff pastry pizzas
Gingerbread men
Cheese straws
Rice Krispie cakes
Gruffalo crumble

Have everything weighed and ready, make something basic cupcakes or krispie cakes to begin with - mine liked to do the ‘fun bits’ like the whisking a decorating and making a mess then eating. Toddlers have such short attention spans so nothing complicated. I used to have mine in the kitchen when I cooked and baked playing or in high chair so they all love food and cooking. I learned how to cook by watching and cooking with my grandma and mum even if I was just in the kitchen chatting. Have fun and enjoy some delicious goodies ☺️

That’s the thing I could buy a cupcake kit but most seem packed with sugar (though he’d love eg the Paw Patrol ones). His older brother (7) loves cooking but is more experienced and older than the toddler.

We like making the fairy cakes recipe from the BBC Good Food site. DD’s favourite thing is mixing up the icing and getting more of it in her mouth/on her clothes/all over the worktop than the actual cakes

My nephew made pizzas (with a ready made base) decorated with vegetable strips etc that he chose himself. A good way to get more veg into him!

He made the bases when he was about 6 !

You don’t need to include sugar to do baking. Ask chatgpt for some sugar free biscuits which contain veggies, for example.

My 2 yr DGD enjoys the fairy cake mixes that come in boxes. They are quick to make ( suit toddler attention span), quick to cook and usually have bright coloured icing and rice paper stickers. Not very healthy but fine once in a while. She also enjoys making jam tarts ( I make pastry in advance, she rolls it out and has fun with the pastry cutters and jam).
