Hi I'm looking to make changes to my weekly food shop. Currently spending around £85 I can afford to up this. I'm trying to wean the kids off sugary cereal and only have these at weekends. We eat a lot of biscuits as we have weekly visitors of around 8-10 family members and often get the biscuit plate out. I've cut back this week! We would normally have 6 packets in. We are a family of 6. Young children. I haven't bought any break time snacks for the kids this week. I would normally buy Oreo packs or crisps. Again I am trying to cut this back and choose something healthier but I struggle for ideas. My children all get free schools (universal free school meals here) apart from the oldest.

I'm looking for ideas on what to change/ add in as on another thread I took quite a beating about the unhealthy food shop (understandable) it's something I've been wanting to change for a long time. We both work and I was brought up on food like this so it's partly learned behaviour.

I'm not demonising cereal but you can choose healthier ones. You can add fruit to sweeten it.

Yes - I said below that children can quickly get used to plain cornflakes with some raisins and sliced banana.

But I also wouldn’t worry too much about them having something like honey loops, if the rest of their meals were pretty decent for the most part.

I skimmed and all the packets of biscuits jumped out at me. That's a lot of rubbish snacks.

I want to get rid of as much if the UPF as possible but I would really struggle without cereal as it's the one thing the girls can make themselves as I struggle to get out the door on work days dropping them all off at various places before my work at 8am. I only work 3 days though 😄

Weetabix with dried fruits and nuts would be a better option. Porridge madebin your day off with added fruits etc kept in fridge and eaten cold.
Greek yogurt with fruits, seeds and nuts.
Peanut butter on wholegrain toast.
All easy swaps for sugary cereals.

Cold, several days old porridge?! She’s not running a 19th century orphanage!!!!

Haha. It's actually like rice pudding if you add grated apple/pear, sultanas, cinnamon etc Greek yogurt too. It's no different than over night oats that are so popular.

You will never convince me that small children would willingly eat it before school and without bribery.

Seaside3 · 23/02/2026 20:52

Good job I don't have to then.

SansSouciii · 23/02/2026 21:21

One of our favourites is peanut butter and marmite together on toast. Peanut butter on top, marmite underneath - magic combination.

Or melted butter with marmite on top on hot toast - slice into soldiers to dip into runny boiled egg.

I also do overnight oats in the fridge just so they don’t need cooking for 10 mins - but I heat them through in microwave and add more milk or yogurt so creamy and loose

Thanks so much everyone. I am doing my online shopping tomorrow and will add in some changes based on the advice here. So many ideas I just hadn't considered ☺️

Thank you, @Mumstheword1983 . You come across as being a decent MNer and a great mum. It's not easy when you have so much going on.
You'll get there. Flowers

How’s it going OP?

Mumstheword1983 · 14/03/2026 13:45

Thanks for asking. Well! They have enjoyed the morning changes more than I thought. Plain cornflakes with runny honey and banana is so popular. I am still allowing chocolate cereal Saturday or Sunday and we have toast and egg etc sometimes. Pitta bread with chicken and veggies has been a hit and we tried home made pizzas! I'm saving the baking for the Easter break ☺️

I am really really impressed OP. Well done. You're making quite rapid improvements I'd say based on this. DD is now routinely eating mushrooms chopped up in other foods so I'm taking this as a win for me currently!

sashh · 15/03/2026 05:03

Well done OP

Samewrinklesnewname · 15/03/2026 07:21

Your approach to this is perfect, making little changes and building on them rather than a wholesale “we’re never eating any of this ever again”. Baking in the holidays is perfect, if you have time, as others have suggested, you and the kids can learn together. I do a lot of baking (always have as my mum and both grans were excellent bakers), and whilst no cake or biscuit is a “health” food, for me it’s about cutting down UPFs and knowing what ingredients are in our food.

Mumstheword1983 · 15/03/2026 09:29

Thanks all. We are all off for 2 weeks together at Easter so it's a perfect time to try some of these ideas together ☺️
