Need help for some beige food inspiration

Hello all,

I am looking for some suggestion regarding beige comfort food?

I am not originally English, and I mainly cook everything from scratch. Recently my partner (he's English) has recently told me that a lot of the food has become a bit too same-y and every now and then he would like something more comforting, "complex carbs" (in his own words) that are easy to make.

These are the ones that I wrote down:

  • egg, ham and chips
  • fish finger and beans with mash/chips
  • fish finger sandwich with chips
  • sausage roll with beans and chips
  • cottage pie

Any other recommendations?

Toad in the hole
Cheese & potato pie
Macaroni cheese
Panhaggerty
Burgers/hotdogs etc?
Pizza?

Has he given you any suggestions himself of what he means? To me beige food would be frozen food like chicken dippers, potato smilies, Kiev's etc but that doesn't seem to be what he's suggesting?

Cheese and potato pie recipe

A budget-friendly family classic, this cheese and potato pie (no pastry, lots of cheese) has a real taste of schooldays nostalgia.

Ohhh these are great! Thank you!

he suggested the fish finger sandwich, spaghetti hoops, tuna with cheese and mash potato.

i ask for more him more suggestions, or at least send me a recipe link and I'll just get the ingredients. He was struggling to articulate himself 😂 when I typed in google what he meant, it came up as beige food

Those aren't complex carbs.

Are you cooking food from your own country? Because if so, it might he that hes just craving more simple English food. Some of that night well be the less healthy/convenience food like chicken nuggets and chips (beige food) or jacket potatoes with beans/cheese/tuna etc but it could also be things like pies and tarts, cottage/shepards pie, grilled steak/chicken/fish served simply with potatoes (or chips) and veg.

Or if your food is often quite spicey or strong flavours, more simple general "european" food like pasta, risotto etc?

I think it would be helpful if he gave you some examples of actual meals. Or, frankly, cooked them.himself.

Also try older recipes books from English authors like Delia Smith, nigella lawson, Hairy bikers. Even some if jamie oliver original cook books might be helpful.

Complex carbs are foods like grains, legumes, brown rice, sweet potato.

He’s after multiple simple carbs by the sounds of it, though?

Maybe he can make these meals himself to show you what he’s on about.

I believe this is what it is. I mainly cook gousto recipes but I do tend to make more Mediterranean dishes. Every now and then I'll make a cottage pie, or bangers and mash with peas and onion gravy, steak and chips. He does finish the entire plate when I make those.

but the complex carbs did through me off as you said 😂he doesn't like rice or sweet potato

How often does he cook?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2026 09:10

It sounds like he’d just like old school British and toddler classics every now and then.

Toad in the hole
pie and mash
stew and dumplings
cheese and onion quiche
jacket potatoes and cauliflower cheese
macaroni cheese

Easy to make? Then he can do it, can't he?Hmm

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2026 09:11

And those are all things he could quickly learn to cook himself.

If he can’t sort sausage roll and beans out by himself occasionally, he needs to go.

He doesn't cook. He orders fish and chips for us from our local chippy van on Wednesday. Friday and Saturday it's takeaway night ( anything from pizza, KFC, Nando's, maccies, Burger King) or every now and then we go to the pub.

So at least 43% of your weekly meals are already beige. Why are you contemplating doing more?Confused

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/02/2026 10:09

This is ridiculous. He wants to just eat crap and he expects you to make and serve said crap to him. Not okay.

So... he doesn't cook and, in fact, you are already eating rhe food he likes almost half the time anyway?

He's not sounding great here. Does he at least clean? Do dishes? Cover any of the mental load?!

And he calls it ‘complex carbohydrates’!

I would not be adding more beige food to that list!

Either the whole thread is a joke or the OP is being totally taken advantage of. Bonkers.
