Steak date

I’m going away on a date and I want to cook. I think steak and chips is fairy fail safe given it’s going to be in an Air BnB without my normal cooking things. Had anyone got tips on how to make this yummy, what sort of sauce I shoild prepare and other things I would need to take to cook with?

Hey, I literally cook steak every single day so I can help with this! To cook the perfect steak you will need:

A cast iron pan (ideal)
Butter (actual butter, not margerine)
Steak, of course. Sirloin is a great choice
Sea salt flakes (Maldon is a great brand to choose)

Make sure the cast iron pan is seasoned - you can find out how to do this on Google.

  1. Get the pan VERY hot, with the butter already in it. Butter should be red / brown
  2. Put the steak in the pan. Depending on how you want it cooking and how thick the steak is, timing will vary. Easy to find thickness / cooking time ratios on Google
  3. Do not touch the steak. Don't poke it or press it down other than when first in the pan. Move the pan to swish the fat around the pan to keep the pan from burning
  4. Flip it when the first side is done, again, in accordance with how rare you want it. the cooked side should have a beautiful sear.
  5. Repeat on this side. Once the second side is cooked, move the fat to the hot part of the pan and press the fat strip down to sear it. Do this until its golden / brown.
  6. When cooked, leave to rest for a minute before serving. Add salt, voila, the perfect steak!

I find peppercorn sauce is a popular choice for steak, though I just have it plain with salt. Chips are the perfect side to steak; grilled asparagus goes really well, too.

For the chips I would do chunky oven cooked chips in either goose fat or butter.

Hope all goes well OP, enjoy the date and I hope you both love your steak! 😊

Well that’s a bloody fantastic response! Re the sauce…. Is there a good ready made one you would recommend?

Just playing devil's advocate - does your date eat steak?

If I cook anything that needs intense heat, fat flying, pan spitting..... my hair absolutely stinks, a real date turn off.

Haha, no worries! This one from M&S is simply DIVINE;

Would highly recommend. Wouldn't recommend the packet mix ones, the ready made from most supermarkets are all pretty good, but the M&S is my go to when trying to impress lol. Good luck!

Yes he eats steak but not seafood (whereas I would have been fine doing something nice with seabass!)

Agree with butter, very hot pan, fry one side and sprinkle the other side with seasalt, pepper and garlic granules. or finely slice fresh garlic and rosemary and add to the pan.

Serve with garlic butter or fresh herb butter or finely sliced and fried mushrooms with garlic or grilled beef tomatoes with herbs, chunky chips and watercress salad or wilted spinach. Maybe with some dijon or grain mustard on the side

I’d go with béarnaise sauce on the side - this with steak and salad is my absolute favourite meal
