Sainsbury’s are better than Waitrose (tasteless, milky custard), M&S (dry), Co-op (dry and tasteless).

Fellow custard tart lover watching with interest! 😋

The Chinese bakery if you have one nearby.

This was my first thought when I saw the title too!!! Failing that Ah Toots bakery in Bristol do a wonderful one.

Very niche but Hulson's in North Wales makes the very best.

ByZippyDreamer · 03/02/2026 20:00

M&S are by far the best!

Chersfrozenface · 03/02/2026 20:01

We have a genuine Portuguese bakery in the city centre. Soz.

Tamega · 03/02/2026 20:03

The ones you find in Lidl are also very very good ( I am Portuguese living in south London)

Waitingfordoggo · 03/02/2026 20:04

But are we talking about egg custard tart or pastel de nata? Because whilst they are obviously similar, they’re not quite the same thing (I love both, fwiw).

thehonscupboard · 03/02/2026 20:12

Another niche one, there’s a chain of three called ‘Staple’ on the Kent coast. Traditional British custard tart rather than the (also delicious) Portuguese ones. It was so tasty I’d consider a day trip just for another one.

YourWinter · 03/02/2026 20:14

Morrisons are my favourite custard tarts. I don’t like pastel de nata, the flaky pastry kind with weird custard!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/02/2026 22:08

Marks and Sparks for the best English custard tarts.

Or make a South African one which is like an English one but more solid. Delicious.

I disliked the English ones, but then I went to Portugal !
Waitrose have frozen pasteis de nata, which are handy to have in the freezer when my local Tesco in-store bakery has run out.

Im late to the show -
But the BEST custard Tart is making it at home following the fabulous Marcus Wareing recipe. It’s the one he won ‘Great British Menu’ with about 100 years ago (or so it seems) which launched his career. He cooked it for the Queen (Birthday or maybe Golden Jubilee meal) and it’s one of the best recipes I have ever come across.
It’s so fabulous that when I cook it I don’t want to share it and I wonder why I am fat.

It’s the tart that Marcus served to the Queen in 2006 for her 80th birthday. Serve it at home for a slice of royalty.

if we’re talking supermarkets than I’ve only had the Sainsburys and Aldi ones. Quality wise they’re the same.

Neither compete with ones you get from a proper baker.

xsquared · 20/03/2026 00:17

Probably Macau!

ExitPursuedByABare · 20/03/2026 00:26

I used to make one but can’t remember whose recipe. It had 8 egg yolks in it and was lush.

hollytheheroic · 20/03/2026 02:16

I love an egg custard. That is all.
