Safe Salmon

I bought some a multi pack of fresh salmon pieces from marks and Spencer last May. I froze them well within date.

I have found them at the bottom of the freezer. The pack says freeze for three months but I have frozen them for 8 months.

I don't want to throw them out.

Will we die if I defrost and cook them?!

It's the texture that will be affected if anything. They will be perfectly safe.

I think the issue with oily fish (like salmon) is that home freezers don't freeze deep enough to really stabilize the oil. AFAIK it isn't harmful after a long freeze but the flavour can change.

So I'd eat them (and have done in the past)

I agree that the texture will be affected, but quite safe to eat.

We have eaten stuff way older than that from the freezer. It won’t kill you. Defrost it and see what it looks like. You can tell if it has got freezer burn or anything like that.

It will be fine. We have pork that we processed from our pigs 2 years ago that we eat regularly. Having it tonight for dinner actually!

Salmon consistency just deteriorates over time in the freezer, I'd eat them but not just cooked plain, I'd need them in a fish pie/sauce/curry or something to disguise the change in texture.
