Gluten Free Bread with low sugar/not UPF?

OgreWithClogsOn · 24/01/2026 18:46

I’ve had to cut out gluten for health reasons and also keep added sugar low. Has anyone found a nice gluten free loaf/bread rolls that isn’t high in sugar and with loads of weird ingredients added? I used to like rye bread and sourdough but they are off the menu for now.

I like the gluten free bagels from the New York Bakery Company. I haven't actually looked at the ingredients but the taste is good. I liked Amisa focaccia too but it's hard to find.

The M&S free from products are also reliable.

MsWilmottsGhost · 24/01/2026 19:35

I think all of the GF breads are upfs unfortunately. I try not to look at the ingredients 😂

I loved proper home baked wheat bread so it was really difficult to give it up. I do eat GF bread, usually Warburton's, but most gf breads are rank, with a funny aftertaste, and I think it's the xantham gum I can't stand. It makes GF bread taste foul to me.

If you don't want upf, you probably need to avoid buying "fake" lookalike gf food completely, and bake your own bread, cake, pastry etc from scratch. If you have success let me know, despite good baking skills with wheat flour, all the GF stuff I baked tasted like cardboard. I went back to buying the pre prepared gf bread and just try to avoid upfs elsewhere in my diet.

There is one that ocado sells but it is over £6 for a loaf!!

OgreWithClogsOn · 24/01/2026 20:19

Thanks everyone for ideas so far.

@Carthorses I’m wondering if it’s this one you were thinking of? https://www.ocado.com/products/good-grain-bakery-gluten-free-sourdough/552222011
I don’t eat a lot so could get something like these to freeze and eat gradually. It is very pricey though!

I’ve taken to buying doves freee from bread mixes and making my own (bought a bread maker after a while). Most gf bread didn’t fill me up and is full of crap (like all easy gf food unfortunately!). Sainsburys seeded rolls are good- I haven’t looked at the ingredients on those though

AcidicTrifle · 24/01/2026 20:37

Does anyone know one that doesn’t have egg in it? I’m on an exclusion diet at the moment and it seems every GF bread has egg white in it (or soy, which I’m also not allowed)

The Ocado loaf mentioned above is the only one I’ve found. Shocked at the price, but will report back tomorrow when it arrives if it’s any good!

OttersMayHaveShifted · 24/01/2026 20:37

M&S gf is the nicest I've found. I don't think there are any shop-bought gf breads that aren't massively UPF though.

HotXcrossBumps · 24/01/2026 20:45

If you want a very quick make flat bread naan type then just mix GF flour with Greek natural yogurt add salt., I mix 100g flour with 50g yoghurt and roll out gently then fry couple minutes each side.

Stonecoldhandswarmheart · 24/01/2026 20:55

I’ve had to go gluten free to help with my awful digestive issues. I’ve yet to find a nice gf bread with minimal ultra processed ingredients and those that do taste awful to me.

Someone on here gave me a recipe for gluten free potato farls, not quite the same as bread but quite tasty. I batch cook and freeze and pop into the air fryer when I need a some for breakfast or lunch.

Yep, same.

I don’t eat gf bread because it has always got pea flour / pea protein in it, or apple juice or something else I’m trying to avoid. And it’s horrible.

They look good! Thanks.

Carthorses · 24/01/2026 22:30

Ogrewithclogon. I have bought the seeded one from ocado. It was quite solid, l cut it into slices and froze it. I liked it. It was a few months ago and was very slightly cheaper then! I might buy it again, I'm not eating bread at the moment.

TheSandgroper · 25/01/2026 01:25

I make my own flour being 500g glutinous rice flour (not gluten), 500g tapioca flour, 200g besan/chick pea flour, 200g millet flour.

Make a soda bread with this using flour, sometimes with oat flour added, salt, bicarb, crème of tarter, rice milk. Mix to a damp consistency. Allow to sit for half an hour (gf flour absorbs liquid differently to wheat flour so needs time). I bake in a small tin at about 160c until done. Allow to cool before slicing.

You will need to play with your mix, temperature and timings until you get it right for you.

Somersetbaker · 25/01/2026 10:24

I'm told this recipe is very good. https://www.shipton-mill.com/blogs/journal/shipton-mill-gluten-free-loaf I was going to try it for a friend who if GF, but have no idea where to get the flour other than direct from the mill - places sell their other flour but not the GF bread flour, plus I don't have a high sided loaf tin, but that could be easily solved.

Shipton Mill Gluten-Free Loaf

Ingredients 275g of Shipton Mill Bread Mix 255g of warm water 1 level teaspoon of dried active yeast ¾ teaspoon salt ½ tbs olive oil Method Please follow the below steps carefully. If you use the incorrect bread tin or don’t weigh the water it could go...

I’m definitely going to try out the suggestions above. As a stop-gap I managed to get hold of the Biona millet bread and rice flour bread. Pricey so not a good option if you eat a lot of bread. Have to say say the millet bread was quite a nice texture when toasted and toppings added, it reminded me of rye bread.

@AcidicTrifle did you try the bread you mentioned?

SoScarletItWas · 25/01/2026 17:37

It’s all full of crap (coeliac here). Best bet is to make Becky Excell’s white sandwich loaf.

Katrinawaves · 25/01/2026 18:18

I’ve just made my first gluten free loaf in the bread maker today and it’s come out OK.

Ingredients were:

400g Doves farm wholemeal gluten free flour
2 tbsp flaxseeds in 6tbsp water
320mls warm water
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp dry flax seeds
1.5 tsp salt
1 tbsp each of sunflower, sesame and pumpkin seeds
7g gluten free yeast

i just tried a piece with some peanut butter and it was very nice with no after taste. Other than some xanthan gum, the ingredients of the flour looked OK to me.

I just saw this recipe @OgreWithClogsOn I will have to find the flour so I can give it a go

Just got the Ocado loaf delivered. Not tried it yet, but the texture is incredibly unappealing. Literally a solid lump with barely any squeeze. If I threw it at someone’s head, I’d be worried they’d get a concussion. And it literally fits on the palm of my hand!

I think I’ll be trying some of these recipes, thank you!

WideOpenBeaches · 29/01/2026 08:11

Gail’s sell a GF loaf which is passable. It’s pre wrapped so minimal contact with the GF stuff in store. Not cheap though…

Just read that it has black treacle in it

I also rate the Ocado ones. I try and order a few, cut the loaves in half and put in the freezer. Again, not cheap.

Gluten-Free Sourdough Loaf | Plant based | GAIL's Bakery

Corn, rice, chickpea and teff flours, gluten-free starter, black treacle. This gluten free sourdough loaf has a rich crumb, a dark, light crust and malted flavour.
