Tinned oily fish

Hi, I’m looking for ideas from people who eat tinned oily fish such as mackerel and sardines on what to do with them. I’ve bought some mackerel in spicy tomato sauce but realised I’m not actually sure how to serve it! I’ve seen people talk about having these / sardines on toast, but do you eat them cold from the tin spread on the toast or are you supposed to heat them up? Tuna I’d usually eat cold mixed with mayonnaise and sometimes use it in pasta sauce. So I feel a bit daft not knowing how to eat other tinned fish but it was never eaten in my house growing up so I have no reference point!

I never find any bones in tinned mackerel. Just big chunks of nice fish. I find tinned salmon often has quite a lot, and sardines too - though (don’t freak out!) they’re entirely edible as the process softens them. Mackerel should be safe for you though.

I bought a tin of mackerel fillets in tomato sauce today. Anything else I should add or just put them on toast?

Toast sounds good! I tend to make a tomatoey pasta sauce and stir the tin of mackerel in and have with pasta, but I like it on toast too.

Gosh, I’m still amazed by the incredibly narrow experience of tinned fish revealed on this thread. Only two of us appear to have eaten any beyond sardines, mackerel, tuna and pilchards.

And I’m laughing at @7238SM’s assumption that one might choose it for reasons of economy. My monthly tinned fish expenditure is comparatively vast.

I too use the tinned fish market but Gosh! I don’t think it makes me superior! Just means I pick up some tinned fish when I fancy it.

I really struggle to enjoy tinned sardines. I buy them because I know they're good for me but don't really like them. Anyway, today I mashed up the sardines that come in lemony oil with some cream cheese and had with some red onion on some crisp bread type things. They were bearable that way. Love smoked mackerel paté though.

Have you tried them in pasta or another grain? I love oily fish, but do find it a bit overpowering on toast. Mixing it with lemon or cheese, or a tomato or other sauce with some herbs or spices, and pasta or rice or whatever, 'dilutes' it.
