Giant yorkshire pudding tins

I saw another thread where people said they used fray bentos tins. For those using fray bentos tins - what size are those please? They look quite small - are they 6" or 7" diameter at the top? Thank you :-) Otherwise is a solid bottomed 7" cake tin a good option? I have a falcon enamel large pie plate that makes a great large yorkshire pudding but it's oblong and I'm wanting to make individual ones. Can't find any falcon dishes that are round, the right size etc.

I was also wondering about these - set of 5 ..........

I use a small round enamel pie dish. DD loves a huge yorkie to put her roast in.

I use a Victoria sponge cake tin.

Aussiegold · 19/01/2026 23:42

I use Fray Bentos tins and they are a great size but make sure the oil covers every last bit of the surface and anywhere you might get pudding overhang......!

Thank you. What diameter is it please? I've seen 7" and 8" ones. Not sure if two 8" ones would fit next to each other in my oven, but not sure if 7" would have a large enough hole in the middle for a large yorkshire pudding. I'm thinking to put stew in the middle.

Thank you - is that 7" or 8"?

Ok I bought four of these :-) Falcon enamel round ones 8" - presumably the 8" includes the lip so they'll probably make 7" yorkshire puddings. Just hope two fit in my oven next to each other! They were much more expensive on Amazon. I like the enamel ones.

I am absolutely starving now ive read this!

Edit - I bought the 7" falcon enamal pie plates as well - so have a choice of sizes!

Update! I got the wrong tins ha ha. Those falcon enamel pie plates turned out not to be flat on the bottom - they have a slightly raised central part. I didn’t notice until after I’d heated the fat in the tins - only to find all the fat was round the edges and none in the middle because of the slightly raised part. I put the batter in anyway and got lovely big Yorkshire puddings - however, predictably they stuck to the bottom of the tin in the middle.

7” was just right for us though and I could fit 3 in the oven in one go. So I’m sending the 8” identical ones back. The 7” pie plates will come in useful for something …..

So I’m now looking for 7” solid bottomed cake tins - and finding great difficulty finding any! They are almost all loose bottomed ones.

Robert Dyas - I've got some of these that I bought for doing sponge cakes but they work for giant Yorkshires too

Thank you! I actually got it the wrong way round above. It was the 8" ones I used that were just the right size! And the 7" ones I'm sending back. They are more like flan tins with the hump in the middle.

I had just seen these - which are much more expensive unfortunately - also 8" enamel ones but according to people who bought them, they are flat on the bottom...... I'll check out the link as well :-)

Those look perfect :-)

I had just sent for these other enamel 8" ones below, which were a bit expensive ........Overpriced for what they are, but asked a question on Amazon and had replies saying the bottom is flat inside - but if they don't look right, I'll send them back and get the cake tins you linked :-)

Update. The second enamel ones I sent for were the same tins! Falcon ones - identical with a raised bit in the bottom - except three times the price. So sent those back too and I'll be getting the cake tins!

I have leftover chicken from today and want to make this chicken pie for Friday. Will it be ok in the fridge? Or should I either freeze.the chicken or make the pie and freeze
it?

manywanderings · 27/01/2026 00:30

I'm thinking about these cake tins from procook - they are oven safe up to 260 degrees c conventional/240 degrees fan. Most non stick ones only go up to about 230 conventional/210 fan. I cook the Yorkshires at 210 fan but like to go hotter than that for the fat. Which is why I liked the enamel ones! Because no temperature restriction or risk of off gassing if they get too hot. So linking these procook ones in case anyone else is looking for tins that are ovensafe at higher temperatures!

Ok I've given in and ordered some fray bentos pies! Can I just ask, for those who use those tins - how do you stop them going rusty? I mean obviously wash by hand and dry them but do they eventually go rusty?

OP posts:

I've never kept Fray Bentos tins but with things like iron pans that tend to rust you keep them 'clean' by washing, drying and oiling them (if you do it while they're still warm from washing you only need a tiny amount of seed oil wiped very thinly over the inside/non-painted bits).

booksforever · 27/01/2026 08:29

I got a couple of round enamel pans from a charity shop, always worth a look. I use them for Yorkshire pud, toad in the whole and pies. Also perfect size for a quiche using a wrap as the base!

Sainsbury’s have enamel dishes in at the moment.

Do your yorkies have to be round? My mum always made them in something like this https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/295157357 available in multiple sizes, she also made family size toad-in-the-hole in a large roasting tin. To stop the Fray Bentos tins going rusty, chuck them in the bin unopened, they are dreadful, like some relic of post war rationing. Did you know that Fray Bentos is a city in Uruguay?

I was actually wondering if they actually needed to be round and in fact do have that exact same oblong one you linked (which is definitely flat on the bottom) and have used the larger one for toad in the hole. I'm not sure about the post-war relic with Fray Bentos tins though ha ha - if it does the job.... I don't mind old fashioned things. My main concern is if they stick to the bottom .........

Btw I have a friend from Uruguay - very nice friend.

Those round enamel ones in Sainsbury's in Tescos are just the falcon ones again - the pie plates - which aren't flat on the bottom like the rectangular ones - annoying! I might still use them sometimes anyway and accept they will stick in the middle - but will try the fray bentos tins .,,,when we eventually eat the pies - which could be a long time! Last time we ate them was during the pandemic when we couldn't get any food and Amazon sold them.

They're now owned by Baxters and manufactured in Scotland :-)
